Common beginner mistake: Drawing characters too rigid. ✏️ Example: if a character is sitting, they'll draw them sitting very straight with their back up against the chair.—Just as stiff as the chair itself! 😑

But no one sits that way! A straight, stiff pose doesn't convey the character's attitude or personality at all. It doesn't tell a story. ❌️

Depending on your mood, personality, and activity, you are going to sit in different positions and with different postures. - Tony Bancroft @pumbaaguy

Tony teaches you how to create dynamic and expressive poses for your characters in his AMAZING video course on 21 Draw, 'Drawing Character Poses'! ⚡️🤩 He also shows you key principles used in cartoons to make movements look natural and interesting.

✏️ Use exaggeration to say specific things about a character.

"The facial features of this character are the same, but by exaggerating his cranium, jaw, and neck, we were able to say something different about his personality and physicality: nerdy or buff." - randybishopart

3 things to know before you draw a character 👇️

1️⃣ Start with the line of action.

The line of action is a curve through the center of the whole body. Straight lines read as static. Curves read as movement. Curve it up and the figure lifts. Curve it down and the figure sinks.

2️⃣ Check the center of gravity.

Drop a straight line down from the head. Lands between both feet = The pose feels calm and balanced. Lands on ONE foot = That leg takes the weight, and the hips and shoulders tilt against each other.

3️⃣ Follow the rhythm.

Let the head, arms and legs repeat the curve of your line of action. A sad, slumped pose gets big heavy curves everywhere. Then add one straight line, like an arm sticking out, to break the pattern.

Gesture is about the energy of the pose, not perfect proportions. Structure and volume come after the core gesture is established.
