Kilimanjaro at dawn, and a whole world waking beneath it.

At Ziwani in Tsavo West, the first light washes the red earth in soft rose, and the mountain sits quietly on the horizon. Below, egrets lift off the water in a white storm, a pod of hippos rests in the shallows, and the camp stays tucked into the green by the water’s edge. By evening, the light breaks over Kilimanjaro’s shoulder in long rays, and the plains go dark as the day ends.

White arches, swaying palms, and a pool that holds the whole scene twice.

At Sawa Sawa Beach, Swahili architecture meets the ocean breeze. Clean low sun traces palm shadows across whitewashed walls, brass lanterns hang between pointed arches, and the sea shows through every opening. As night falls the pavilion lights up, warm glow against the dark palms, mirrored perfectly in deep blue water.

Mida Creek opens up from above: mangrove islands stitched together by channels of jade water, a speedboat carving a white line through the middle. Behind it, the tag boat game pulls riders over the sandbanks, their wake splitting the shallows in two. Then the pace drops. Peach-toned cloud spreads across the sky, the tide turns to glass, and the mangroves settle into silhouette as the day lets go.

Stillness, then a shift in perspective.

At Tarangau Retreat in Kilifi, the day starts slowly, beside a pool framed by carved Swahili niches and seashells. Soft light filters through the canopy, the water mirrors every arch, and a quiet practice moves from breath to balance. From above, the whole sanctuary shows itself: a clean turquoise rectangle set into coral stone, wrapped in thick coastal forest.

Shooting architecture like this is a race against the light. The Geoffrey Kent Suite at Olonana faces the Mara River through one long wall of glass, so you work the interiors while the sun is behind the escarpment, then get the drone up before the clouds close. Stone, timber, that burnt-orange lounge, a pool running straight at the water below. Spaces like this are the reason I keep travelling to shoot.

Mist burning off the riverine forest at dawn, the Talek curling around the tents, a pool cut into the lawn under old trees, canvas opening onto green. Then out on the plains — sundowners under a lone acacia as the storm light turns blue.

First light in Naboisho catches the whole mane and turns it copper, every strand lit from the side while the shadow side of his face stays dark. He walked straight at the vehicle, stopped, and looked past us at something we never saw. Shot on the @canoncnafrica Canon R5 with the 70-200 f/2.8 — close enough to read the scars, far enough to leave him alone.

The tide pulls all the way out here, and for about twenty minutes the beach becomes a mirror. 🌅

@sawasawabeach in Msambweni is one of those stretches of the Kenyan coast that still feels undiscovered. At low tide the flats run out for hundreds of metres, holding a thin film of water that catches everything above it — the cloud banks, the first light breaking through, the long amber reflections running back toward the horizon. A single figure walking out there is enough to give the whole frame its scale.

This is what the south coast looks like before the day begins.

Lines Against the Coast — Amkia Villa, Diani

I kept coming back to the pool. The water sits still enough to hand you the whole house twice. Inside, a glass roof lays shadows down in neat bars, and three blown-glass pendants turn in the stairwell window — the only colour in all that white. Then the coast it was built for: Kongo River, Diani sand, the ocean at first light. Good architecture doesn’t fight a place like this. It gets out of the way. taken in Diani Beach South Coast by @21stbrian

The Art of Less — Che Shale

Empty ocean holding one small cloud on the horizon. Sawa Sawa anchored in deep teal with two skiffs keeping their distance. A half moon, cratered and rose-toned, alone in a near-black sky. Che Shale gives you nothing to look at but space — thirteen kilometres of open beach north of Malindi, wind, water, and a dhow that has been part of the view for years. Minimalism isn’t a style here. It’s just what’s left. 🌊 taken in Che Shale | Kenya by @21stbrian

Where the Tide Keeps Time

The sun drops behind the mangrove belt and the creek turns copper, the last boats resting on still water. From above, the fleet scatters across pale jade shallows — dugouts and skiffs anchored where the seagrass runs dark. In Mida, fishing was never a trade you picked. It was handed down: which channel fills first, when the crabs move, which roots to leave alone so the next season still comes. Out with the tide, back with it. taken in Mida Creek Watamu by @21stbrian
