Came across these dead whitebark pines yesterday up in the Tetons. Just a few brown needles left. The big one on the left is likely a few hundred years old or more.

85% of the larger whitebarks here have died, thanks to the mountain pine beetles running rampant due to the local climate warming 2.5F already.

This year, a whitebark was found in the Tetons that was 1289 years old, the oldest known. It had also died recently.

We were at the top of a cliff getting ready to rappel down. Usually you'd look for a live tree as an anchor, but with this beautiful, large tree recently expired, and with its ancient roots woven deep into the rock, we figured it was more than worthy.
