A Life Lived Under One Leader - These Girls Before & After Pictures Perfectly Visualized Putin & Erdogan’s Decades Long Grips On Russia & Turkey

Putin came in promising stability after Russia’s messy 1990s. He quickly sidelined powerful businessmen, took control of major media, and packed the government with loyal security-service allies. Opposition figures have faced bans, prison, exile, or worse, and he changed the constitution so he could potentially stay in power for decades. Russia still votes, but real competition has been squeezed out over time. Erdoğan started off looking like a reformer who was good for the economy and more in touch with religious conservatives. Over time, especially after protests in 2013 and a failed coup in 2016, he used those moments to tighten his grip firing or jailing critics, reshaping the courts and military, and changing the system so most power runs through the presidency. Elections still happen, but he’s made sure the system works heavily in his favor by @247realms

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed neglected to appropriately address domestic security in favor of parroting disproven, antiquated, and deadly colonial narratives in relation to his Northern neighbor Eritrea.

Threatening Eritrean sovereignty over the Port Of Assab took so much of Abiy and his generals time they forgot to handle the first priority of any government, internal security, contributing to the internal strife in Ethiopia you have seen widely reported throughout the world this week.

Mark Carney was perceived as a stern man, to the point and by the book. The former Bank of England Governor and economist was known for his policy goals, not his quick wit, charm, or humor… That is, until Donald Trump, through his brash and ungraceful rants targeted at him, his nation’s sovereignty, and his political predecessor, forced a reaction out of him…

The list of Trump’s condescending statements targeted at Canada are extensive, but we’ll list off the not-so-greatest hits for you here. This past year, Trump referred to Canada as the “51st State” and its Prime Minister as a governor. He sparked a full-blown and unprovoked trade war, sending prices through the roof for millions of Canadians and Americans alike. And, perhaps most strangely, he accused the Canadians of nefarious actions that led to a forest fire that spilled over into the north of Michigan, saying America would seek compensation, despite the accusations being totally baseless…

Carney withstood hit after hit gracefully, making sure not to provoke Trump. But at the World Economic Forum in Davos last year, Mark Carney stood up to Trump, albeit indirectly, and warned middle powers throughout the world to unite in defense of territorial integrity and democratic values, or risk having their sovereignty taken from them through economic coercion by larger powers…

The message was clear: Carney was warning countries that they could not simply assume their sovereignty was safe in a world where larger powers could use their economic might to exert political influence, much like the Trump Administration was doing to Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela in its bid to secure what it sees as its sphere of influence (the entire Western Hemisphere…)

Insane visuals. Video footage showing a Russian soldier shooting an air defense missile over a busy Moscow highway yesterday.

The geopolitical equivalent of an American soldier shooting down an enemy drone with a Stinger missile as it crosses I-95 in Washington D.C…

These cars are filled with Russians who have been told for years there forces are not fighting a War but a “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine. Must be difficult taking that messaging seriously while your urban centers have missiles flying over them and your oil refineries burn every evening… taken in Москва • Moscow by @247realms

When a Westerner thinks of a politician, they typically think of a boring man in a stuffy black-and-white suit, inconspicuous, not necessarily bad, but definitely not exciting, or something that exudes character, culture, or frankly, anything of substance at all. The same could not be said for the wardrobe of Muammar Gaddafi, a man who, for all his faults, (which include thousands of human rights violations, including having critics and opposition tortured and disappeared) knew how to send a message with his clothing, carefully and strategically interweaving political messaging through his threads…

For example, in 2002, Gaddafi wore a Black, Gold, & Red Colonel’s uniform with images of Mao & other Revolutionary Chinese leaders, an ode to the revolutionary spirit he hoped to show the Libyan people still burned in him. And in February of 2004, he showed up to the African Union Summit in a traditional Fulani garment depicting African Revolutionaries including Patrice Lumumba, Nelson Mandela, & Kwame Nkrumah, in a strategic (and slightly performative) show of solidarity with his African counterparts…

Nonetheless, his aesthetics could not be dismissed as LARP, Gaddafi was putting these outfits together while making his presence felt in much more concrete ways throughout the world… whether it be supplying the IRA weapons to the dismay of the British or supplying covert funding to Corsican separatists, Gaddafi was outside and making bold moves in the geo-political and fashion game alike…

Grand displays and fascination aside, a smart man would say Gaddafi would have been wise to spend more time working toward the betterment & stability of Libya like a statesmen, not playing dress up like a teenager, and they would be right. If that were the case, maybe we would be speaking of Muammar Gaddafi in the present, and not the past tense…

Great Britain was once the heart of an Empire on which the sun never set. From the Gold Coast of Ghana to Australia, from the shores of Guyana to Hong Kong, British power was undeniable. For centuries this power went unquestioned… But that my friends was the past, yesterday is yesterday and today is today... This past weekend, we got word that once integral parts of the United Kingdom; Scotland, Wales, & most surprisingly Northern Ireland were set to declare independence. Maybe this is no shock, after all in the past decades London piece by piece disassembled its Empire (in a surprisingly and relatively unviolent process). But losing Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland hit’s particularly close to home (no pun intended)…. Wales went into union with England in 1536, Scotland in 1707, and Northern Ireland just over a century ago in 1921. None of these processes was peaceful, and cultural and literal resistance along with national aspiration remained a presence throughout the centuries, but for many it seemed final, the UK was set in stone, the Union Jack was forever, until it wasn’t…

Time will tell where things go from here and how an already teetering England will manage what is a historic blow to it’s national identity. Will this destabilizing move which is sure to have financial ramifications push the British further into the hands of right-wing Populists promising restoration, or will it force a level-headed national awakening? Only time will tell…
