🧿 I have no poetic or profound words left in me to describe the last 1.5 years bc it has been a wild ride with so much to be grateful for (the hard + the good) 🎗️ I survived breast cancer, a mastectomy, and the worst bout of depression I’ve ever experienced - the latter of which near killed me 🐱 I got the sweetest cat in the world and named her Շունչ (Shoonch) so I remember to breathe 👽 I made a short doc about @symptomerror that had a beautiful festival run, including @arabfilmmedia - my mom came! it was so special ⭐ I published an award-winning children’s book through @lantana_publishing with @luys_illustrator - it makes me 😭 when I get fan mail 🏆 I received the 2025 Creative Capital Award for a dream project with a dream collaborator @emilymkrtichian (we’re launching our studio soon with @maratatevos - more to come!) 📖 I wrote a deeply personal essay for @alhayyamagazine (an honor) called Let’s Sit Crooked and Talk Straight ⚡ I organized a gorgeous multi-day arts program for a gathering of 4000 Global-South feminists at the AWID Forum in Bangkok 😅 😇 I attended a month-long residency at @cdsduke with the best humans & got to bring Saana along (a dream) ❤️‍🩹 I finished a draft of my 1st feature, a story born out of immense grief I *never* thought I’d heal ☕ I co-edited @zines.for.pec with @ebbsandflows_ that launched at our local library where I got to share my grandfather’s rugs & samovar (soon after his passing, աստուած հոգին լուսաւորէ) 🇦🇲 I started writing my first novel - in Western Armenian, no less (!) 💪 I got kinda jacked? 🎨 I debuted a mixed media collection at @maxim_gorki_theater (soon to be at Reflect Gallery in LA) + online at @mykali_magazine in collab w/ @azad.angakh 🧄 I grew the most prolific crop of garlic after years of cultivation 🫀 I discovered a whole new level of intimacy, (re)commitment, and gratefulness for my chosen family & loved ones, esp @_goodcry_ 🍉 I learned some hard, sobering lessons about humanity - but also reclaimed my heart, body & spirit (and who I share it with) 🤫 Believe or not - there is more to report that I’m forgetting 🧿 PS: I am protected & luminous 📸 @taramcmullenphoto ty angel by @29cents
“Ultimately, Portals claims space for mothers and caregivers in our histories and future imaginings, by co-creating work that puts the labor and experience of care at the forefront of the narrative.” The last line of our most recent application to Creative Capital, an award we’ve collectively applied to nearly 10 times. It is an honor and joy to be among this year’s fellows. We are incredibly grateful to @creative_capital and everyone on the panels reading our proposal that thought to themselves, ‘A SWANA science-fiction anthology about motherhood? Yes, the world needs that.’ [Slide 1: 49 headshot bubbles for all 2025 Creative Capital grantees; Slide 2: List of all grantees for Film/Moving Image, including Emily & Kamee; Slide 3: Portals project description from the CC website; Slide 4: Joint headshot of Emily & Kamee, with a collaborative bio] by @29cents

@e_flux — Cazimi Studios is pleased to announce the six recipients of its Portals fellowship, a multi-year collaborative media arts project bringing together artists across disciplines to explore storytelling, care, and collective worldbuilding. The project will culminate in an exhibition launching in 2027. Portals weaves together the speculative imaginaries of caregivers from the SWANA region and its global diasporas. Through film, sound, visual art, and writing, the project reclaims narrative space for caregivers as protagonists—agents of imagination, survival, and futurity. The Portals 2026–28 Fellows are: @morehshin Artist and Assistant Professor of Digital Media Art at Stanford University / @judechehab Filmmaker / @gilda_davidian Artist / @aroussiak_gabrielian Designer, Scholar, and Media artist / @lara_sarkissian Electronic Musician and Sound Artist / Oraib Toukan, Artist and Educator. The project is led by Co-Artistic Directors @29cents and @emilymkrtichian with @mashinkahakopian serving as Curator and Director of Research, and @maratatevos as Associate Curator. 🔗 Go to full announcement through link in bio by @29cents
Across the art world, conversations about care, motherhood, and SWANA futurisms are growing. But the ways SWANA caregivers sustain communities—through kinship, ritual, storytelling, and the daily labor of keeping one another alive—remain largely unnamed. That’s what @emilymkrtichian and @29cents are confronting with their work through @cazimistudios: care as creative practice, cultural inheritance, and reaching towards futures that have not yet been allowed to exist. William Saroyan’s stories have always been a balm for our breaking hearts. I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling. During a challenging time for Armenians everywhere, his work rekindled a dying light that once illuminated my hope in humanity. In all my research and in connecting with his surviving kin and community, I’ve come to the understanding that as storytellers, Saroyan was building and seeking worlds that embody and evoke the idea that even in our darkest hour, we find ways to be kind, joyful, and human. That resonates deeply. I feel deeply honored and grateful for this opportunity to bring ‘The Pomegranate Trees’ to the screen, and to do so in collaboration with so many incredible humans. A closer look… and suddenly the magic feels even brighter. ✨ These zoomed-in moments from The Brighter I Shine by Kamee Abrahamian @29cents and Lusine Ghukasyan @luys_illustrator capture so much: the rose-and-mint birthday table, family stories passed down like gifts, and a child discovering who they are through the voices of their ancestors. Every detail glows with warmth — because the more stories that are told, the brighter this little one shines. 💛 by @29cents
