HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF BAN TUỔI XANH’S CHILDREN’S MUSIC TAPE?

While looking back at songs associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival, we found ourselves digging deeper into the story of Ban Tuổi Xanh, a children’s music group that became part of the musical memories of pre-1975 Saigon.

Listening back to these children’s songs got us thinking about how closely music can stay connected to childhood memories. And maybe that’s part of why, even after growing up, every full-moon season still has a way of bringing us back to something familiar from long ago hehe.

A PART OF SAIGON’S CHILDHOOD MEMORY

Ban Tuổi Xanh was a children’s music group active in Saigon, led by actress Kiều Hạnh from around the mid-1950s.

Beyond singing, its young members also learned music theory, dance and acting, while taking part in children’s programmes across radio, live stages and later television.

Over the years, Ban Tuổi Xanh became part of the childhood memories of many who grew up in Saigon before 1975.

Nhận thấy Sài Gòn thời gian gần đây ngày càng xuất hiện nhiều “pháp sư hộp quẹt” với khả năng biến những chiếc bật lửa của bạn một đi không trở lại chỉ sau một buổi cà phê gặp gỡ chit chat hay những buổi lêu hêu tụ tập ăn uống cùng bạn bè.

A DJ, electronic music editor, and member of OIL Soundsystem and D1S, ZZM has been part of Shenzhen’s underground club scene since 2020. Shaped by internet culture, anime, video games, memes, and club life, his sets move freely through Club Trax, Breaks, UKG, Electro, Cheesy Pop, and high-energy rave sounds. He has also appeared at Boiler Room Shenzhen and shared stages with artists including Addison Groove, Iglooghost, DJ G2G, Umru, and Peterparker69.

@jasonguyen
One of the early figures pushing bass music in Vietnam, DJ Jase is the founder of The Beats Saigon and Foreigndub in Sydney. DJing since 2001, his sound has travelled through House, Nu Skool Breaks, Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop, Reggae, and Dubstep. Across more than two decades, he has shared stages with names including Major Lazer, DJ Premier, Daedelus, and DJ Patife, while helping grow bass music culture in Vietnam.

A familiar force in Saigon’s underground art and music scene, Tizone is also the co-founder of experimental music and art collective Vấp Cục Đá. Her sets move fluidly across House, Techno, R&B, Juke, Footwork, Garage, UK Bass, Dancehall, Afrobeat, Baile Funk, and beyond. Over the years, she has shared stages with artists such as Yeti Out, Ahadadream, Onra, Hi-Klassified, and Andre Power.

Born and raised in Hanoi, Di Trần approaches DJing through the relationship between sound, space, and the people inside it. Active across third spaces, his sets move between reflective and free-flowing states, inviting listeners to connect, move, and dance. Hồi nhỏ, cứ hễ tới dịp rằm là lại xách quần chạy quanh xóm, nghe tiếng trống lân, ăn bánh, phá cỗ rồi rủ rê đám bạn nhà bên cùng aura farming với những chiếc lồng đèn đủ màu sắc. Lớn lên rồi, những hoạt động ngày lễ có thể không còn như xưa, nhưng Trung Thu vẫn là một cái cớ rất hợp lý để bước ra ngoài, gặp nhau và giải khuây nhân dịp lễ.

“Chung Khu” là cách tụi mình chơi chữ với hai chữ Trung Thu. “Khu” ở đây không phải một khu phố cụ thể, mà là nơi được tạo ra bởi những người cùng xuất hiện trong một đêm. Người này rủ người kia tới, nhóm này gặp nhóm khác, rồi âm nhạc gom tất cả vào chung một cuộc vui.

Trăng rằm sáng tỏ, không còn rước đèn quanh xóm thì năm nay mình rước nhau từ Terrace xuống Club vậy!!!
