Teach Thursday: What happens when you make the unfamiliar feel familiar? 🍎🥕

At the 2026 Connect Conference, The Produce Ambassador Jill Overdorf led attendees through her Tasting and Growing with Intention Workshop, bringing together decades of experience as a chef and in the produce industry.

From apples and carrots to jicama, persimmons, rambutan, Romanesco, sea beans, and more, Jill encouraged attendees to taste, ask questions, and become more comfortable exploring foods they may not know.

Her goal: help people better understand food, flavor, and the connection between agriculture and hospitality one taste at a time.

Food Fact Friday: Where do cranberries actually grow?

Take your best guess before you swipe.

The answer: on low-growing vines in beds commonly called bogs or marshes.

Cranberries do not grow submerged underwater. During wet harvesting, growers flood the beds so the berries can float to the surface and be collected which is probably where the confusion comes from.

Food and agriculture has always been personal for Derek.

Growing up on a dairy farm gave Derek an early look at the care, work, and passion that goes into raising animals, caring for the land, and producing food.

Today, as Executive Director of Open Fields Alliance, formerly Cultivating Change Foundation, he continues helping people connect with careers, leadership opportunities, and community across food and agriculture.

For Derek, that connection goes all the way back to where he started and it’s something he still loves sharing with others.

Have you ever seen where your grapes actually come from? 🍇

Dr. Ronda Hamm is taking us into the vineyard for a closer look at grapes while they are still growing on the vine.

These grapes may be small now, but they will continue growing throughout the season. Different varieties of grapes eventually become several familiar products — fresh grapes, grape juice, dried grapes we know as raisins, and, for adults, wine.

It’s an everyday food with an entire growing process happening long before we ever see it at the grocery store.

You do not have to start in agriculture to find your place in it.

At the 2026 Connect Conference, we asked speaker Megan Rock "Why is Food & Agriculture important?". Megan shared how a career that began with meteorology and environmental conservation eventually led her into food and agriculture.

After entering the industry with Bunge and later continuing her career with CHS, Megan discovered what continues to draw so many people to this work: everybody has to eat.

From grain grown in Colorado, Missouri, or Ohio to the systems that help move it around the world, food and agriculture is complex, connected, and filled with career pathways that many people may never realize exist.

Megan’s story is a reminder that your education or first job does not have to define your entire career. Sometimes the path into food and agriculture starts somewhere completely unexpected.
