After being seen by @aubreysekhabi at The State Theatre as a young director. The Market Theatre was the next space I set my eyes on as a budding and over-eager theatre maker…Next thing you know I am a finalist director for The Market Lab’s ZWAKALA FESTIVAL where our experimental piece, ‘8 MINUETS’ was mentored by the generous @monagengmotshabi who along with @mpitsemolimo (then Market Laboratory Head) believed so much in us when most people just didn’t understand the creative language of the work we were creating at the time.With that said…we won the ZWAKALA FESTIVAL that year. And in retrospect- I feel it was more than a victory; it was the opening chapter of my journey as a director, that would eventually see me presenting works beyond 8 MINUETS at the Market Theatre complex!Under the artistic vision of James Ngcobo, my voice as a theatre maker found clarity and confidence. Every opportunity to make work planted another seed, growing into a tree whose fruits continue to nourish my journey as an artist.Little did I know that those seemingly isolated moments of directing various works at The Market were never really isolated. They were laying the foundation for this moment. A moment where I would be entrusted with telling this monumental story, drawing from the 50-year history of the Market Theatre as both inspiration and compass, shaping a narrative that honours its remarkable legacy. Big thanks to @markettheatre and @greghomann for believing in our gifts. And to @yolandibm for always being who and what you are for us!
