Carrier
Walter Cruz, 2026
Integrally pigmented concrete

Carrier grows out of Ramona, a portrait of my maternal great-grandmother. As I spent more time with her, I found myself thinking about the distance between the Dominican Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the histories that continue to connect those places. That led me to Kifwebe masks created by Songye and Luba communities in Central Africa.

I wasn’t interested in recreating those traditions. I wanted to see what might emerge when they entered into conversation with my own family history.

Like Ramona, the sculpture is cast entirely in integrally pigmented concrete. The color is mixed directly into the material, becoming part of its structure rather than a surface applied afterward.

Together, these works begin an ongoing body of work exploring Afro-Dominican ancestry through architectural forms of remembrance. A portrait sculpture cast in integrally pigmented concrete. A geometric mask rests over the face, creating the impression that the portrait and mask are in conversation rather than one concealing the other. The sculpture has a rough, porous surface with layers of turquoise blue and warm iron-oxide red embedded throughout the concrete. The figure’s textured hair is gathered into a bun, and the mask features angular forms with narrow eye openings and carved geometric patterns. The sculpture is photographed against a clean white background. Titled Carrier, the work extends the portrait of the artist’s maternal great-grandmother and draws from Kifwebe masking traditions of Songye and Luba communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as part of an ongoing body of work exploring Afro-Dominican ancestry, memory, and architecture through sculpture. by @2oceans

KRAFTED Workshop Series | Workshop 2 of 4

On August 30, Walter Cruz will take what he has learned through years of working with cement and open that process up to our community.

You’ll learn by doing—working directly with the material, understanding how it takes form, and casting a keepsake that holds a memory of your own.
The goal of Krafted is not just to watch someone practice their Kraft. It’s to get close enough to learn it, try it for yourself, and leave with knowledge you didn’t have when you arrived.

Event is at capacity, be on the lookout for the rest of the workshops. Sign ups open.

We sat down with sculptor Walter Cruz @2oceans to talk about his practice, the meaning behind working with concrete, and the stories we choose to preserve through what we make.
For KRAFTED Workshop 2, Walter invites us to explore remembrance through the process of cement casting.
Art is a great start, but Kraft allows it to last.

The finished piece is only one part of the process.
Walter Cruz’s work begins with understanding material. You’ll learn how cement moves, takes shape, holds texture, and ultimately preserves what was placed into it.
For Krafted, we’re looking closer at the work: the repetition, patience, and knowledge developed through committing yourself to a process over time.
On August 30, Walter will bring that process into the workshop and place it directly into the hands of our community.
Come ready to work with your hands, learn something new, and create a new memory.

Remembrance through concrete.
For our next Krafted workshop, sculptor Walter Cruz will teach his process of remembrance through concrete, guiding each participant through casting a keepsake by hand.
This is an opportunity to get inside the process, learning how cement is worked and cast, and how an object can become a way of holding onto a memory.
No prior experience is needed. Materials and tools will be provided, and you’ll create a piece made by your own hands and a new process you can carry forward.

How do you speak through your Kraft?

Meet Walter Cruz @2oceans, a sculptor whose practice gives memory a physical form.

For the next Krafted workshop, Walter will open up his process and teach cement mold making by hand. Each participant will be guided through the process of casting a one-of-a-kind keepsake in cement.

Krafted is built around handing down knowledge from people who have committed themselves to their trade and are opening up their practice to teach their community.

You’ll be equipped with the materials, tools, and guidance to learn the process firsthand and leave with something you built with your own hands. No prior experience is needed.

BTS of my latest research-based body of work. Turns out Dominican Carnival masquarades are directly connected to Congolese mask traditions and rituals.
Grateful to be a vessel that’s bridges that gap in this moment when so much is going on in both countries. V
