TRACING THOUGHT: ‘WHAT’S MY LINE?’ AT MIAMI BEACH REGIONAL LIBRARY
Written By Olga Garcia-Mayoral

“What’s My Line? Drawing as Experience” transforms a public civic space into an active conversation about what drawing can be. Curated by Dimitry Saïd Chamy and Charo Oquet and presented by Edge Zones, the group exhibition at the Miami Beach Regional Library on display through Thursday, July 16, features 16 artists whose practices move fluidly across sound, code, fiber, video, printmaking, painting, and installation. Rather than treating drawing as a preparatory medium or static image, the exhibition expands it into something experiential: a trace of thought, movement, memory, and interaction.

Sunday 20 September, 3–6 PM at @greenspacemiami.

A preview screening of Mystic Triangle, Christopher Mitchell’s documentary shot across three lakou over 15 years in Haiti, followed by a conversation with artist Dimitry Saïd Chamy.

The two participating artists in Count It All Joy! discuss how they come at the same word from opposite directions. Mitchell travels to the lakou and films what is still held there — land, rhythm, lineage, obligation, kept in the same hands. Chamy’s installation, My memory palace is more of a lakou. When I draw, it rains, builds one out of memory: his grandmother Mémé’s fabric treasures, his grandfather Luc’s garden, his great-grandmother Yaya’s healing hands, all of it reassembled from what he calls the generative paradox of poorly remembered fragments.

One goes to the site. The other draws until it rains.

In honor of the reboot/relaunch of The New Haven Advocate, I am sharing covers of the early years of City-Wide Open Studios, 1998-2005. The Advocate was an essential partner and component to the festival, then a program of Artspace New Haven. Artspace was lucky to have its publisher, Gail Thompson, on the Board, and over the years, Hank Hoffman, Chris Arnott, Matt Ford, and many others did the rounds on behalf of the paper and wrote about the festival. The arrival of the CWOS issue, and the insert inside, was always greeted with immense excitement. Props to the new crew and the old crew returning! I’ll be at the publication party Friday September 4 at Contois Tavern, hope to see you there! And looking forward to New Haven Open Studios next month @cthankster @bass9331 @ericmarchart @carnottcourant @famismamis #artspacenh #cwos

All issues are in the Artspace archive at Yale Haas Library. This year the Alt spaces were scattered throughout Ninth Square.

Opening Tonight:

THE SHAPE OF FEELING
Abstraction as Material, System, and Sensation

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, August 22, 2026
6:00–9:00 PM

Come by tonight!
to see new works:

ANBA DLO
Dimitry Saïd Chamy 2026
Three-channel video installation — silent, 4K, looping.

Anba dlo is Haitian Kreyòl for under the water, or underwater—that feeling we all get. In Vodou it is where the dead reside before they are called back up.

The screens on the floor — Bat tanbou nan dlo and Amwe! — are pools, reflecting the (absent) sounds that drove their animations, selected from the Alan Lomax archives recorded in Haiti in the 30s. The standing monitor is the Gwo Pwason. Each runs a different length and loops. The source driving all three pieces is a single drawing taken from my archive—and patches I coded to animate it in real time.

In Haiti, water, color, carnival are stitched into the patterns of life. The work references my childhood memories and imagination: fish scales, drums, the practices of beading ritual, and cultural artifacts with sequins—and, that feeling of overwhelm.

The three channels:

Amwe! (Help!)
2026, silent, 4K looping, 0m53s

Bat tanbou nan dlo (beat the drums in water)
2026, silent, 4K looping, 7m00s

Gwo Pwason (Big Fish) 2026, silent, 4K looping, 8m32s

The Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator
is celebrating 10 years!

Started with less hair. Somehow also less gray.
Next week, our tenth cohort walks in the door.

That will be 160 amazing creatives
since I walked in the door,
but it feels like I just got here!

I’m so lucky to work with a team
that truly cares about their futures.

I ❤️ RA+DI

COUNTDOWN

“What’s My Line? Drawing as Experience” is on view through July 16th.

The exhibition opens with a large-scale, durational drawing located at the entrance of the library _ an initial gesture, an unfolding trace that greets the viewers before they enter the space. Inside the main room, this dialogue expands through a selection of works, including three other pieces of mine, that intimately converse with the work of an incredible group of artists.

You are warmly invited to visit and explore before the closing.

What actually happens when AI enters an artist’s studio? And maybe more importantly… what doesn’t? 👀

Hosted by the Broward County Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program and curated by Sophie Blachet, join us for the final Cultural Rendezvous of the season on 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟗–𝟏𝟏 𝐀𝐌 at @madarts_space in Dania Beach featuring “The Loop and the Tool: AI in a Working Studio” with transdisciplinary artist Dimitry Saïd Chamy @2urn_

Through real projects, live experimentation, and honest conversation, Dimitry will explore how AI has become part of his creative practice, from organizational systems and coding collaboration to developing entirely new interactive works.

The talk will also dive into The Unreading Room, a participatory archive project “vibe-coded” before its debut, opening up a larger conversation around the evolving role of AI in creative spaces.

This is one you won’t want to miss. RSVP by clicking the link in our bio #BrowardArts

This video clip is from a new project “Screensharing” that recently premiered in Warsaw. The project initiated by artist Dimitry Said @2urn_ in which performative gestures of an international group of artists create visual dialogues presented in video form. Chamy’s project was conceived as a response to the experience of isolation and forced digital intimacy during the pandemic.
