How on earth do you fit 2 weeks of life for 4 people on two bikes?!

It looks like a lot, but after doing this for two years with a 2 and 4-year-old, we’ve gotten the breakdown down to a science.

Here is where everything actually goes:
• Handlebar Bag: Valuables, passports, phones, fast-reach essentials
• Front Bags: Kids’ clothes only (keeps them isolated & easy to grab)
• Rear Bags: Snacks, daily food supply, and my clothes
• Rear Rack: The 4-person shelter/tent
• The Seats: @kidsrideshotgun seats on both bikes so the kids get front-row views
• The Tow & Trailer: @followme_tandem to hook up our 4yo’s bike when her legs tire, plus a trailer hauling our 2yo’s bike + extra gear

We try to pack light and stay organised throughout the trip. But it’s not always easy 😅

When we go mountain biking with our two little ones it for sure isn’t smooth sailing. Just getting ready in the morning is a massive achievement with all the gear, snacks and stuff we need to take.

Today was tough. There was a lot of complaining and “I don’t want to do this” as our daughter was navigating riding her new bike for the first time on the trails.

We don’t do this because it’s easy. We do it to show our kids that resilience, nature, and connecting as a family are always worth the effort.

What’s the hardest part of getting your kids out on the trail? Tell us below!

We’re currently on the road using our ride to raise funds for wildfire recovery in the South of France. Tap the link in our bio to learn about our GoFundMe for Fondation de France!

Guildford to the sea by bike, with a two and four year old. 37 miles on the Downs Link, a disused railway line, so it’s flat, mostly traffic-free and very family friendly.

Day one: 26 miles and many, many playground stops. Day two tomorrow

Comment DOWNS and I’ll send you the route.

A future cycle acrobat in the making? 😂

Honestly, we didn’t even plan for him to sit on the @followme_tandem but it just happened.

I didn’t turn around but couldn’t believe when I saw this video.

I once asked my husband why anyone needs more than one bike. Now I own four 🚲

I grew up in Germany where everyone cycles, but only for getting from A to B. Then lockdown, road rides, London commutes, and now two little kids and family adventures on bikes.

You don’t need fancy kit or a fitness level to start. Cycling can begin with one ride around the block, and it grows with you.

What’s one thing that would make you cycle more with your family?

My son is very used to ride on his @kidsrideshotgun seat with Papa but this was the first time he hit the trails with me.

I’m so glad we did this together and captured this special moment. 🥺

Getting ready to go on a little adventure with two small kids can sometimes take longer than the actual adventure. 😂 But we still think it’s always worth it, no matter how short or long we’ll stay in the woods.

We’re trying to be organised to make it quicker but I’m also telling myself it’s the weekend and rushing won’t make things better. So I’ve accepted that getting out of the house for an outdoor adventure takes time and that’s ok. The important bit is that we’re going, not when we are leaving.

I’ve also learnt that it doesn’t matter whether we’re in the woods for 1hr or 3hrs. What matters is that we’re enjoying ourselves. I haven’t perfected this mindset yet but I’m getting there.

Please tell me I’m not alone in this? 😅

I cannot imagine life without our cargo bike. For a long time I’d say “I’m not gonna spend that much money on a bike”. But what really convinced me was the fact that I can transport two kids on this up until they are perhaps 10ish. Whereas any other option to take your kids onto your bike is always just temporary for when they are little.

We use it for absolutely everything. I go to the gym on it, we do the school run, pop into town (added bonus: saves parking), do our groceries,… you name it!

I also think it’s much nicer for the kids to explore the world like this than sitting in a car seat. And we can interact a lot more too. Not to mention we can skip the traffic of course. I’ll stop here but I can probably want a million other reason to get a family cargo bike!

Do you have one? Been thinking about it for a while? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Cycling infrastructure is one thing that gets me angry and frustrated from time to time. Being German I am just used for safe cycle paths to be part of the town’s infrastructure. And it gets used! Go to Germany and you’ll see any generation, young or old, cycling around town to get from A to B.

When I think about where we live there are certain paths I can take with my kids but even that often means cycling on the pedestrian pathway. And many times, like yesterday, it would just be completely impossible for my kids to cycle on these paths by themselves. Maybe when they are 10 or much older anyway. And it makes me angry. Cycling is so good for us. Brings us movement, joy, keeps the roads emptier and is great for the environment. But without the right infrastructure it’s just impossible for people to start.

What is cycling infrastructure like where you live? Let us know in the comments!

We’d love for families to cycle more so follow along for practical ways to get on your bikes more.

Have you ever worn a bin bag as a rain coat? 😂 In the morning when we got ready and it was clear we had to cycle through some rain I wasn’t too keen. In the end, we had fun making holes into bin bags for our heads and arms. And luckily the rain stopped in the afternoon.

I felt very unprepared and mom guilt kicked in (even though the kids would be 100% dry when sitting in the trailer) - how could’ve not packed the perfect rainproof outfit for us? Well, sometimes life asks you to deal with the unexpected and you learn that in the end it’s not a big deal. We’re all alive and healthy. And we even had fun. These are the moments we remember. It wasn’t perfect. But we had a laugh.

Follow for more cycling fun times as a family of four!

Taking the train is hands down the best way to turn a family bike tour into an stress-free, one-way adventure - you just ride continuously without worrying about looping back to the car.

That said, platforming with two loaded bikes, a trailer, and two kids comes with its own set of rules! We’ve learned a few lessons the hard way, from out-of-order lifts to last-minute platform scrambles.

Swipe through for the 4 things we always do now to make the train journey home smooth and easy.

Have you ever taken your bikes on the train with kids? What’s your top tip or biggest headache? Drop it below!
