Yin & Yang & 1 & 0 (U+0FCA)

In his 1937 paper A Symbolic Analysis of Relay and Switching Circuits, Claude Shannon is first to connect logical operators and statements, what Boole called the Laws of Thought, with the earliest digital computers. More specifically, Shannon saw that any bit of information or operation upon it can be expressed with a single binary operator, such as the on/off states of computer circuits.

While ahead of it‘s time in one sense, the idea that information when broken into it’s smallest parts can be described as binary is a very, very old idea. Boole himself proposed the primacy of the NOT operator, and before the logicians many philosophers from Greece to India all had schools of dualist metaphysics. The oldest continued tradition of this sort is likely found in the Chinese schools, famously depicted in the Taijitu, or yin-yang.

The origins of this symbol and it‘s philosophy belong to pre-history, probably somewhere much more immediate than the circuits of Shannon or the symbolics of Boole.

Among the millions of stars looking back at you is a splotchy river snaking across the sky we call the Milky Way. The pattern cuts the sky in half with a C-shaped line reversed in the southern and northern hemispheres respectively, or an S-shaped line when put side by side to reveal the full picture visible from Earth with the naked eye.

The ancient Chinese, like anyone fortunate enough to see the virgin sky, had a great deal of interest and reverence for the cosmos. This interest and reverence led to one of the most characteristic themes in Chinese thought: the heavenly order and it’s impact on ideas of justice and social harmony.

Chinese thinkers in a variety of times and schools drew on the authority of the heavens to assert the primary task of human beings as to establish ourselves in such a way reflective, conducive, or in balance with the cosmic order. The principle of balance and harmony is most famously depicted in the Taijitu, which in it‘s most popular form also resembles the full S-shaped map of the milky-way, and, as we now know, the spiral shape of galaxies from any angle.
