Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Plot: Meet Lindy - quiet, content moderator in San Francisco, who spends her days working hard to maintain an acceptable social facade and her weekends riding on the BART to SFO, to spend time with her beloved planes (one of whom she is convinced she will ‘marry’ through the a destined plane crash). Lindy secret desire to be united with planes is just that - a secret; until the day she decides to join her co-worker and only friend, Katrina’s monthly brunch & vision board afternoons. What started out as a carefully, concealed desire soon threatens to change the world Lindy has so desperately tried to fit into. Thoughts 💭: Initially I had a hard time connecting to Lindy - it is quite obvious that she has traits of autism (and as someone who works with a lot of diagnosed and undiagnosed children with the disorder, it was tricky for me not to want to dive into the pages of the books and help her). But that is also one of the commentaries that author, Kate Folk, is making about the world we live in - why do we feel the need to help or mould people into being the ‘same’ as the rest of us when there are many who are clearly happy being their original, unconventional selves? I definitely took a hiatus when reading this book, because of how Lindy was being exploited by other characters (I’m looking at you Dave, owner of the content moderation company 👀), but ultimately the book reminded me that there was beauty in allowing people to unapologetically themselves. TLDR: A hilarious and original exploration on society, autism and loneliness.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Plot: In a not too distant future, an unnamed civil servant is promoted to work on a special government project - acting as ‘bridge’ for people who have been revived different British ages. Tasked with looking after the handsome Victorian, Commander Gore, our narrator and the commander end up in a race against time to save their present and past, from someone who is changing their future. Thoughts 💭: I’m a great believer in the fact that a good denouement can make or break a book and that was certainly the case for The Ministry of Time. Whilst the first 2/3 were sweet, I struggled to see where the story was going and it was only in the final 40-50 pages, that all the different narratives slotted in together. I struggled to empathise with both the narrator and many of the other civil servant type characters in the story - they all lacked emotional depth (even the so-called baddies). However the character of Commander Gore absolutely stole each and every page and it’s for him, that you ultimately stay the course of the story. TLDR: Great hero, brilliant final plot twist, average till then. #firstbookreview #firstbookoftheyear #1/36 #firstpost by @30somethingbooklover
