“I’ve been on the island for 59 years. I was born here right after the hurricane that split the channel. It was shallow then - we could swim to the North side. The life is slower. It’s good, man. I don’t like the city.

Everyone here know me. They think I’m crazy. I get my coconuts all times. Climb the trees up at 3 in the morning in the dark, and they think I’m crazy for that, but that’s what I do, man. I sell to the restaurants and them around town. People know I get the best.”

Across Guatemala, photographer and storyteller Zachariah Brown follows the story of corn. Not through maps, but through the aromas of roadside kitchens, the rhythm of shared meals, and the generations who continue to shape its legacy.

Masa, My Body: Corn Flour Reflections from the Side of the Road is a meditation on culture, community, and the dough that built civilizations. A reminder that food is never just food. It is memory, identity, and devotion.

Tikal’s Temple V rises hundreds of feet, covered in moss, challenging the sky. humans have been building for our entire existence; taller temples to a grander Jaguar God. miles of hiking through the ancient city and then I’m reminded - even on our best efforts, the sun always sets.

in the western valleys of Belize, hugging tight the Guatemalan border, sits the town of San Ignacio. it’s not “sleepy” - revving pickups packed with commuters and crowing roosters would contest. neither is it “undiscovered.” the entry point for numerous Mayan ruins, the land here has been inhabited for thousands of years.

it is, however, singularly Belizean. hawkers flirt for the wallets of those passing by, women sell aromatic stewed chicken pupusas in stalls, and school uniformed children play basketball in riverside courts. the convenience stores are all Chinese, the conversations in melodic Creole, Spanish, and K’ekchi Maya. the vibe is slow enough to savor but fast enough so as to need to look both ways before you cross the street.
