Nate Rembisz has spent his high school football career proving there isn’t much on a football field he can’t do.

But the La Center High senior’s most important contribution this season might be the position he chose not to play.

As a sophomore, Rembisz was an all-state place kicker. A year later, he became an all-league quarterback. Now, he’s making his mark at wide receiver and defensive back, filling key needs for a Wildcats team that graduated a senior-heavy group.

The 4A Greater St. Helens League district cross country championship meet Wednesday has been moved from a public park to the former Underwriters Laboratories campus in Camas over security concerns.

The Camas High School cross country program has received national attention over the participation of a transgender runner.

The 4A district meet is typically held Lewisville Regional Park, north of Battle Ground. 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League President Bob Kickner said league athletic directors voted 9-0 to move the race.

This season has already seen multiple football programs either cancel their season or be reduced to playing junior varsity contests.

On this week's episode of the Varsity360 podcast, The Columbian's Micah Rice and Meg Wochnick talk about what's leading talent and resources to be concentrated in fewer programs, leaving the cupboard bare at others.

It’s been a weird high school football season in Southwest Washington.

There were two changes to the schedule this fall for the 4A Greater St. Helens League and the 2A GSHL teams, and those have produced mixed results.

Well, at least this week we can turn the page.

Almost every game from here out will matter in every league. So, let’s take a look at what teams are battling for and who is in the mix.

The Camas High School cross country program finds itself on the front lines of the debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Camas junior Logan Mihailoff, who competed in a boys race recently as Sept. 5, has run in girls races in the team’s last five events.

That has attracted the attention of at least one national news outlet and spawned local protests from female runners and their parents.

The latest came Tuesday at dual meet Camas hosted against Battle Ground at UL Campus. Thirteen of the 24 girls who started for Camas walked the first 50 meters of the race, some with arms linked, before exiting the course in protest.

Kelso gave Camas all it could handle in a 4A/3A GSHL crossover game on Friday.

Kelso took a 30-27 lead on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Mendes with 5:52 left.

But the Papermakers answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by the game-winner — a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ben Druckman to Blake Schafer with 1:54 left — for a 34-30 win.

“Credit Kelso for battling and putting some long drives together,” Camas coach Adam Mathieson said. “They had the reverse pass bag of tricks. … They went deep into the bag of tricks there. They’re a good football team. And sometimes it takes 48 minutes (to win a game).”

Plus notes from Battle Ground, Woodland and Washougal.
