Birthdays, those funny days when we inevitably take stock. And this year I am GRATEFUL (in caps). A month ago we had a health scare with my mum, one of those real ones involving a 2.5 week hospital stay and days when you don’t know if all your lives are about to change for the very, very worst. But those who know my mum know that she’s made of tougher stuff than that.

The last year has been one when a lot of good things have happened and right now, I’m just happy to be celebrating my mum’s recovery and my birthday with a healthy dose of Italian “dolce vita”. Chin chin 🥂 by @365daysofadventures

Indeed, Brazil has called out to me again! Here’s to kicking off 1.5 months adventuring around my favourite place in the world.

And I’m starting from a somewhat unusual location: Brasilia. Three days exploring this city, drawn on paper in the shape of an airplane. Any modernist’s dream, first impressions are that, for someone used to Europe’s cobbled, winding alleyways, this layout is a little jarring.

12 hours in and my heart’s already so full! Everyone trying to be helpful whenever they can, the typical Brazilian chatter wherever you are and a friend, who I met two years ago in a taxi ride to an ocean-front eco-community in the middle of nowhere in Bahia, who gives you the warmest welcome 💙

And sometimes holidays don’t go as planned and you realize that IG is indeed the highlight reel of people’s lives…
The island where we stay was very close to the bull’s eye target of the floods that hit Greece at the start of this week. Alonissos was spared the wrath of the storm but we did get 4 days of “take-shelter-indoors” storm and needing to reorganize a (much longer) journey back to the port, from which we’re sailing back to Italy tonight. That coupled with bronchitis has meant that that this hasn’t been exactly like my other Greek summer holidays. I love this place and we’ll be back again next year, just maybe in July instead! taken in Igoumenítsa, Greece by @365daysofadventures

OH PARIS…
The city I called home for two years ten years ago. I’ve realized this week that you hold many more memories than I thought. Maybe it was the weekend celebrating my all-time favourite person @oliverbzz , maybe it was the sun shining the whole time, maybe it was the endless strolls down wonderfully quaint streets with all the neighborhood feels and the beautiful buildings. I have fallen in love with you all over again.

The jury’s still out on Trancoso…will it be Tulum V2 (which I hated) or a quaint, touristy town done right? Will share the verdict tomorrow after exploring!

So here I am back 3 years & a pandemic later to never ending beaches, caipirinhas and music everywhere you go!

My 15-year old love affair with this country is still going as strong as ever and, after 2.5 weeks in Rio working remotely & enjoying pre-Carnaval, I am loving the quiet and calmness of this wonderful place.

Over the next two weeks or so I was thinking of sharing more tips & tricks of travelling in this part of the world, having done a lot of Brazil and quite a few other Latin American countries, solo.

This is my third time in Seville. Although all three time under very different circumstances, each time I fall in love with the city all over again. The beautiful architecture, the wonderful cobblestoned alleyways, people sitting outside drinking & eating at whatever time, night or day.

Lagos you’ve been…interesting…

The cliffs are beautiful but if you want a testament to how intensive 70s real estate developments & overtourism has ruined some of Europe’s most beautiful coastline, I think that this part of the Algarve unfortunately is an example 😓

Of course coming in August does not help (and I’ve definitely learnt my lesson that I won’t be travelling in August in the Med again) but overall it’s really sad to see a place which has lost all of its Portuguese soul & just become a tourist playground.

This is the same feeling I had in Tulum and Jericoacoara. Renting a car today & ready to head west to hopefully less travelled routes…

So here I am on my first solo travel adventure after more than three years!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very grateful that the pandemic has given me time with my nearest & dearest, a great job with a lot of flexibility and a new home but, the last few months especially, I’ve felt like as if I was sleep-walking a bit. So here I am solo travelling (although hoping to see some much loved familiar faces along the way) in Lisbon & the Algarve and then a week learning about sustainability & community living @tamerahealingbiotope . An energy reset if you like, doing what I’ve always loved most. Onwards & upwards to more adventures!
