POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Back from another estate sale. I picked up this pile and had to lug it down the street back to my car because parking was awful. Not fun.

You can know you're not healthy, but it's still humbling when you do something, and then realize that was conclusive proof you're not healthy.

Now I will spend my afternoon sitting on the floor sorting through what I got.

I'm reading Rebecca now. At first I didn't like it, and almost gave up on it. I began to enjoy it around Chapter 9. Then I kinda turned on it in chapter 15, but now in chapter 19 I'm in to it again.

But throughout I keep seeing our narrator as 90s Winona Ryder, and Maxim as Lord Melchett from Blackadder (Stephen Fry).

Does anyone else see it?

I couldn't help myself. I loved the 90s Cadfael series, and was always curious to know how the books would compare. I wasn't in a rush to buy them though.

But then I came across this set of 4 on @pangobooks and I couldn't resist. They looked mint! That's quite an achievement for decades old mass market paperbacks.

I just hope it's okay to read the series out of order.

Okay @nyrbooks social media team, time for you to do a little work. You should send this guy @apnreads a gift card or a coupon code. Something! It is entirely because of his review of the NYRB release of the Universal Baseball Association that I began reading your books.

At the start of summer, I had ZERO books from NYRB. Now I have 51. I think he deserves a little swag.

Continuing my obsession with red ink pens, here's the Zebra Sarasa Clip Vintage in "wine" red.

I love the color. It's an excellent shade for writing. Nice and easy on the eyes. As far as writing quality though, I've felt better. The pen was a touch scratchy, and I noticed it caused me to write narrower. My loops were extraordinarily tight when writing with this. Perhaps it was because it was a 0.5 mm tip. I usually write with a 0.7 mm. Still, not a bad experience.

The Quiet American was not what I expected. I went into this thinking 'spy thriller'. The elements of that type of story are present but Greene doesn't put the story together that way. What you get is a two-level story.

But first, the plot. The protagonist is actually a cynical British journalist assigned to the French colonial war in Vietnam. The eponymous Quiet American is mostly present in his memory, but I won't tell you why! The plot is driven by what "hijinks" he gets up to while there.

Which brings us to our first level. Under the plot, Greene is giving us a lesson about America's mistake in getting involved in Vietnam. The story is an allegory. The Quiet American should have listened to the British journalist, as America should have listened to Britain in fighting the Cold War in the Third World. This was not a unique opinion coming from Greene. It was prevalent among the post-war British. If you watched The Crown, remember the scene where Churchill explains to the Queen why it's vital Anthony Eden sets up a summit meeting with Eisenhower.

But then we can take the elevator down to level two. Within a Cold War allegory, you get a discussion on personal conscience. All the actions that drive the espionage story derive from conscience. We all have one. We can run from it but it always catches up. Our British journalist thought he had it locked away but too much death got to him. At the end, he's eaten away by guilt. Guilt with no chance of confession. No absolution. Yeah, it always catches up.

These are some of my oldest journals. They go back about 12 to 14 years. I was just putting them away when I noticed what bad shape they're in. Cracking and pitting all over. The dye coming off in a few spots. It makes me wonder when the pages will detach.

Don't buy cheap notebooks!

Last month I brought home a bunch of books from an estate sale. In those books I collected a lot of bookmarks. Here's a few booksellers that haven't survived.

Years ago I worked in SF. I made a lot of visits to Alexander Book Company. Any time I wanted to get away from my desk was an excuse to browse. Sadly they did not survive the pandemic slump. Truly sad.

Stacey's was a legendary bookseller in SF. Unfortunately it closed in 2009, long before my time. Such a shame because I used to work on the same block! If it lasted I could have been in there all the time.

Tillman Place Bookshop must have been the cosiest bookshop in all of SF. It closed in 1999. Just imagine though, walking down this little alleyway to browse packed bookshelves for hours.

Benjamin Books is outside of SF but it means something to me. Most of their locations were at airports but they had one in the underground mall in the WTC. Back in the 80s, whenever my mom took me to lower Manhattan, we took the E train to the last stop and walked up through the mall before getting to the street.

We browsed books at Benjamin Books and I think another bookstore there. Was it B. Dalton? It wouldn't surprise me if there's over a dozen of these Benjamin Books bookmarks hidden away in old books at my mom's place. by @383dave

What should I choose to read next?

I just finished The Alchemist. I need to review that along with The Quiet American. But what should I start on next from this subset of my TBR.

Every time I make a video, I tell myself to go faster, and yet every video gets longer.

I recorded an unboxing of some books I ordered, but it was so long I cut it into two parts. This is part one. I'll post part two tomorrow.
