A two-story white house with black shutters shows signs of an interior fire, potentially originating from a chimney malfunction on a cold autumn morning. Dispatch reports heavy smoke from the chimney, with flames now visible in a second-story window on the Charlie side. Residents state no known occupants are inside, but a search is necessary to confirm. Engine 1 and Truck 1 arrive first, with additional support from Engine 2 and Engine 3 on the way. What are your initial actions?

People ask me how long it takes to build a realistic fire sim in 3AlarmLabs. The honest answer: a few minutes. Here’s the whole thing, start to finish.

When I started building 3AlarmLabs, I had one goal: make it dead simple to put a real building in front of your crew and run it. This update gets us closer than ever.
Here’s what’s new:

We added 20+ new structure types — residential and commercial. Farmhouses, row homes, ranches, auto shops, taxpayers, motels, offices, strip malls. The buildings your crews actually pull up to. Drop one into a scenario in a single tap. No setup, no modeling, nothing to learn.

Classrooms now hold up to 100, so you can run a live, instructor-led drill for the whole shift online. We cleaned up the Team page so getting your department signed in takes one join code and a couple minutes. And the whole platform is faster.

I’d rather show you than tell you. Head to 3alarmlabs.com and run the free demo — pick a building, run a scenario, see it for yourself in about a minute. If it clicks the way I think it will, get your department on a plan and start training today.

You’re the officer in charge and this is your first-due arrival. You have thick, dark smoke pushing from the top of the garage door with lighter smoke showing from the bottom. Before we ever stretch a line or force a door, what are we noticing?

The obvious observation is that the fire is likely involving the garage area or a basement level beneath it. That could mean ordinary contents burning, but it could also mean a vehicle fire. If a vehicle is involved, there’s always the possibility that someone is home. It’s easy to assume the homeowner is at work because it’s daytime, but that assumption can get us into trouble. This could be an elderly resident, someone who works nights and is sleeping, someone home sick, or simply someone enjoying a day off.

Take a look at the single window above the garage. Is that a bedroom? An office? A storage space? If it is a sleeping area, how does that change your priorities? The exterior also suggests there is likely interior access between the garage and the living space. The sidewalk and layout on the Bravo side may indicate an addition or alternate means of egress on the side or rear of the home. The upper floor appears to be a Cape-style space, which means knee walls, void spaces, and hidden fire travel are all possibilities.

Something else to consider is what we don’t see. There are no obvious children’s toys or indicators of young kids living there, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t occupants inside. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

These are all mental notes—not conclusions. Good size-up means building a picture while remaining flexible enough to abandon that picture the moment new information presents itself. Every theory we develop on arrival could be completely wrong.

So here’s the discussion:

How are you attacking this fire?

Are you making the push through the interior basement stairs? Taking the garage door? Searching for another access point? What hazards are you concerned about? What indicators are influencing your decision-making process?

Let’s hear your size-up and game plan. by @3alarmlabs

For training companies running classes, firefighters preparing for promotion, and firehouses trying to keep crews sharp, the goal is the same:

More reps. Better decisions. Better command confidence.

With pre-authored command scenarios, radio-based reps, replay review, and fresh scenarios added every week, 3AlarmLabs gives firefighters a more accessible way to train.

Fire command training shouldn’t be locked behind expensive, department-only software.

3AlarmLabs gives individual firefighters and firehouses a modern way to train with pre-authored command scenarios, replay review, and fresh weekly scenario drops.
