1914 Polo Grounds Game Honus Wagner. This gorgeous game card is a far more affordable option than most other playing days issues of the greatest NL player of the dead ball era, dominating with unmatched skill and consistency. A versatile shortstop, he won eight batting titles and was revered for both his offensive power and defensive brilliance. As one of the five original inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Wagner’s legacy stands as a cornerstone of the sport’s history. by @3d_80skid

1963 Fleer Sandy Koufax. While his time was brief, his peak is one the greatest of all time. I believe the often over looked 63 Fleer set has one of the best looking cards of the “left arm of God. “ by @3d_80skid

1959 Topps Frank Robinson. I love it when I find a card and have no clue why it got the grade nor do I examine it with magnification to find out. My eyes tell me all I need to know. On top of that it’s already such a bargain for a guy whose performance was so close to Mays, Aaron, and Mantle yet his hobby love is a minuscule fraction of theirs. On top of that, he has the significance of breaking the color barrier for MLB managers. by @3d_80skid

1941 Goudey Mel Ott. Mel Ott was a superstar for the New York Giants from 1926-47. By tailoring his swing to take advantage of the very short (252 ft) right field line of the Polo Grounds, in 1945, he became the first NL player with 500 home runs, finishing with 511. He also had a .304 lifetime batting average with a very impressive.414 on base percentage. - The 1941 Goudey set was the final gasp from the card company that came out of the gates like gang busters with the legendary sets of 1933 and 1934. They did struggle with the issue of cardboard shortages with the start of wartime production efforts and there were rampant quality issues with the set, as seen here with this severe miscut. The line on top of the card with the card number, team, and position belongs on the bottom of the card. Ott is one of only 2 Hall of Famers in this 33 card set, with teammate Carl Hubbell being the other. This set is by far the rarest of the Goudey issues with only ~160 graded copies of all 4 color variations: blue, green, red, and yellow. With SGC not tracking the color variations like PSA there are only 30-50 known copies of each variation. by @3d_80skid

1951 Bowman Roy Campanella - the most iconic shot of one of the greatest catchers of all time. Unfortunately he lost part of his prime to the segregation of the sport, but the fact that he still won 3 MVP awards in his short MLB career is quite remarkable. This card was my favorite pickup from this year’s Strongsville Sports Collector’s Convention. by @3d_80skid

1909 T206 Napoleon Lajoie. A player so good that when Cleveland acquired him they renamed the team for him. He was the biggest rival in the AL to Ty Cobb’s batting title supremacy. He was the leading vote getter of the second class of the Hall of Fame in 1937. I couldn’t resist getting this card of him wearing a sweater and the color and clarity of this particular copy drew me right in. by @3d_80skid

1934-36 Batter Up Dizzy Dean. The Batter Up set was produced by National Chicle, the same company that made the Diamond Stars set through the same three years. The 192 card set was made with multiple color tints. This particular example was a choice find as the front is pristine, with the grade fully driven by a piece of scrapbook still stuck to the blank back with glue. Dean had a very brief 5 1/2 year dominant peak to earn his place in Cooperstown punctuated by his outstanding MVP season of 1934 ending in a World Series title for the Cardinals. by @3d_80skid

While Babe Ruth was the dominant offensive force in the AL in the 1920s, Rogers Hornsby was similarly dominant in the NL. He had a five year stretch from 1921-1925 with a combined batting average of .402 while averaging 29 home runs. He’s easily the best offensive second baseman of all time and arguably the best right handed hitter. For the card I chose, I fell in love with the photo on this 1921-23 National Caramel card. With only 31 graded copies, I didn’t want to be picky about centering when the photo looks so nice. by @3d_80skid

I think I may have uncovered a doppelgänger situation with these recent pickups. I wonder if Graig knows how to throw a knuckleball? 1967 Topps Phil Niekro. @midlifecards by @3d_80skid

The “Mechanical Man” as he was known for his consistent standard of high level play every day. He finished with over 2800 hits, a .320 lifetime average, and the fifth highest WAR for a second baseman. Here is his 1941 Play Ball card, my first card from the set. by @3d_80skid
