Most hospital 3D-printing labs think the job is to build an ISO 13485 quality system. Erik Boelen says that’s the wrong target. Boelen built a certified system from scratch at #Xilloc, the company behind the world’s first #3Dprinted titanium jaw. His warning: every hospital printing implants has quietly become a manufacturer, and most don’t know it yet.

🧬 #3DPRINTING BIOMATERIALS FRONTIER — Sept 10, 2026

The defining shift of 2026: from 3D printing structure to printing function. Biomaterials are moving from afterthought to the regulated, investment-grade core of #3Dprinted medicine — soft bioresins, bioactive ceramics, and titanium lattices, #metamaterials, #AI #ML material discovery, all at once.

We're convening the researchers, founders, and industry leaders defining that shift:
🔹 Scott Taylor, PhD — Poly-Med
🔹 Fabian Trumper — Arrakis Bio
🔹 Prof. Kamal Choudhary — Johns Hopkins
🔹 Andrew C. Weems, PhD — Resilient Medical
🔹 Ebrahim Yarali — MERLN, Maastricht
🎙 Moderated by Craig Rosenblum — Himed

What would you build if gravity stopped being a design constraint? 🚀

I hate to tell you this, but everything about human biology is optimized for one place: Earth. 🌍

Gravity is so fundamental to how our cells build, hold shape, and age that we barely think of it as a variable. Remove it, and biology behaves in ways we've never seen before.

That's the spine behind Episode 123 of The Lattice Podcast, my conversation with Dr. Michael Roberts, Chief Scientific Officer of the ISS National Laboratory and VP at CASIS.

A few topics that stayed with me 👇
🛰️ On Earth, gravity hinders bioprinted tissue. In microgravity, that constraint disappears — opening a path to thick, vascularized human tissue.
🧬 Auxilium printed 8 nerve-repair devices in ~2 hours in orbit.
🔬 Microgravity accelerates models of aging, cancer, and disease — one of the clearest windows we have into understanding ourselves.
🚀 With the ISS retiring ~2030 and launch costs falling fast, what's next for biology in space?

The EU’s agenda has shifted to competitiveness, tech sovereignty, preparedness, and security. Dr. Naomi Nathan of Mobility goes Additive makes a direct case: additive manufacturing is an enabler of every one of them.

But she is just as direct about the industry’s own gap. Policymakers are inundated with requests, and showing up with “we can do 10,000 things” doesn’t land. The work is to connect AM to the goals already on their agenda — and to speak it in their language, not ours.

That reframing, from a list of capabilities to a fit with national priorities, is what MGA is organizing the industry around.

If you work in AM: are we making the case on our terms, or on the policymaker’s?

No, we’re not printing organs yet.

Dr. Naomi Nathan is excited about bioprinting — but she deliberately debunks the hype, because she doesn’t want the field to get lost in it. The real story: strong affinity for bioprinting, plus proven 3D printing that’s already changing lives today.

Excitement without overclaiming. Full episode on The Lattice Podcast: https://3dheals.com/episode-129-medical-3d-printing-adoption-in-the-eu-with-naomi-nathan/

Investors say they want great technology. What they actually buy is proof that someone will pay for it.

Jim West puts it bluntly: the thing that convinces an investor or a strategic acquirer isn't the pitch — it's traction.

"Commercial traction is the sexiest thing to an investor, to a strategic, everybody wants to see it … When people start buying it, that's when people know it works."

And West — who leads BioTools Innovator, the nonprofit accelerator for life-science tools and diagnostics — adds a trap founders miss: the deals you've already signed can sink you. Give a strategic worldwide exclusivity, or hand a region away in an early license, and you can quietly destroy your exit before the conversation even starts.

Protect the technology, validate it, then show people buying it. In that order.

If you're building toward an acquisition, have this conversation early.
