The Empress / Venus Pandemos, Venus Urania

Think of this more like a thought process than a traditional representation of a card. Here we are focusing on the creative aspect of the Empress and her role as The Great Mother. Typically her significations are represented by the imagery of the Natural world, but here we are focusing on the dimension of her that resembles the World Soul - The aspect of reality responsible for channeling the creative forces of the above, down into the below.

Here she is transmitting the ideas of the Divine Mind (the stars) into the embodied nature of the Natural World (the pomegranate gown.) Thus making her at once both the earthly and the heavenly Venus. (Venus Pandemos/Venus Urania) Her crown represents rulership, and governance - she who sets into order. Her throne represents groundedness. She “wears” the pomegranate gown for it is she who ensouls nature, fosters fertility, and governs the cycles of birth, growth and decay.

One can also think of this image as representing the ascent in Plato’s Symposium. The rise from the beauty of the sensory world to the contemplation of divine beauty and love.

This is the beginning of a series of odes to the beloved Venus which will culminate with a talisman made during her peak exaltation in the 27° of Pisces. (Picatrix, Warnock translation)

The Second Pentacle of Venus

The dark path that led me to the Light

Like many of you, I’m sure - my journey to the Path was not pleasant. It was filled with catastrophic amounts of pain, grief, and personal turmoil. However it was this very darkness that led me to understand I had forsaken the light in the first place. It was this dark path that ultimately led me to it.

This painting serves as a symbolic ode to the overcoming of that darkness, and the odd sense of gratitude we have for it.
I chose to make it black and white to represent the past - A period long gone, a dead version of myself. The soul rides atop a dark horse, blindfolded - a state of unknowing. There is a light in the sky - the Eternal light. There is a light in her center - the Light within. Behind her, a White horse stands ; there the whole time but awaiting her arrival. She has turned her back on it. Crows circle her head - she is on the path of Death. The dark horse also has a white eye, because though the path is dark, the Divine is still somewhere at the heart of things.

May the light be with you all in these dark times.

At the moment we can only hope that humanity is atop a dark horse of its own, heading toward a greener pasture.

Whatever the case may be, there is an Eternal light in the cosmos, and its counterpart is the light within.
