Rybakina was World No. 1 two days before she played the US Open final. Zverev could finish the year at the top without beating Jannik Sinner once.

She clinched it in the quarterfinals against Zheng, ending Sabalenka's 99-week run, then beat Sabalenka in the final anyway. The 30th woman ever to reach the summit.

His case is stranger. Zverev is 0-5 against Sinner this year and has lost ten straight to him, but Sinner drops 3,550 ranking points between now and Turin while Zverev drops only 1,040. The 700 he banked in New York may cover the difference.

Two new names at No. 1, and neither one was decided by a final.

The leverage has completely flipped.
