Today we remember Beatriz ‘Tati’ Allende Bussi, militant of Che Guevara’s ELN guerrilla and daughter of Chilean president Salvador Allende, who committed suicide on this day in 1977.

She served as her father’s closest confidant and was there, 7 months pregnant, on that terrible morning of September 11th, 1973. Eyewitnesses say it was she who brought the submachine gun to Allende gifted to him by Fidel Castro on that fateful day immortalized by that picture of Allende bearing arms. She was ordered to leave the presidential palace by her father against her wishes.

Beatriz was far more than just someone’s daughter though, she was far more radical than her father and militarily trained by the Cubans. She participated intimately in clandestine activities throughout the continent, most notably in support of Che Guevara’s outfit in Bolivia. Unfortunately she was denied the opportunity to fight on three occasions, with Che in Bolivia, with her father on 9/11 and finally after the coup she was not allowed to leave Cuba and join the underground resistance in Chile. In exile she led Chilean Committee of Solidarity with the Antifascist Resistance until resigning shortly before taking her life.
