Today my beautiful, brilliant, feral, wild child is 3. She has been her own person since minute one, she has to do everything herself, she will remind you that she loves you about 15 times a day, she loves bread (just bread), and if there is a mess in the house she probably planned it.

We are so lucky to have her in our lives, I couldn’t imagine a day without her silly made up songs, or strange but brilliant way of saying things, or the colour and sparkle she brings to everything. She’s my favourite girl in the world. If you ask her how much we love her she’ll say three hundred dollars but the real answer is infinity.

This weekend we celebrated my baby’s 5th birthday! 5 years ago he made me a mama and he’s amazed me every day since. Born with a cleft lip, he had surgery at 4 months old and I swear we were more scared than he was. He’s still fearless today.

He’s courageous, he’s curious, he’s an incredible performer (you should hear him sing Shakira!), he’s passionate, he’s smart, and he’s one of my favourite people in this whole world.

I’m so proud of him. I cannot wait to keep watching him grow up. Happy birthday my Miles man, we love you so much!

Most people are lucky if they get to spend most of their childhood having at least one of their grandparents. So I know how lucky I was that I got to spend nearly half a century with my grandmother.

But, unfortunately, all great things need to come to an end eventually, and after an incredible 103 years on this planet, my amazing Bubbie Evelyn left us yesterday.

And although we were all prepared for this day to come, it still doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye.

It’s almost impossible to put into words just how amazing my Bubbie was. Up until the almost very end she was always smart, quick, and funny. Throughout her 90s, most doctors didn’t even believe how old she actually was.

But more importantly than that, right up to the very end she was always a force of love, encouragement, and support. No matter what happened or what I did in life, my bubbie always had my back (even if she also gave me shit about it).

I will always cherish memories of spending my summer weekends with her at the cottage, getting to sleep over at her house and be incredibly spoiled when my parents went out of town, her teaching me how to cook and bake all my favourite dishes of hers, and nothing will ever will ever burn the image from my mind of the way her face lit up when she met my son, her first grandchild, in person for the first time.

I was really lucky to get to spend the amount of time that I did with her and I will think about it forever going forward.

Shannon always joked that the only command she ever gave Jersey was that he had to try to live forever. And holy fuck did he try. But over the years, he got older, he got a lot slower, and recently he got sick, and we decided that it just wasn’t fair of us to keep asking him to keep trying anymore. And so, with possibly the greatest sadness I’ve ever felt in my life, we said goodbye to Jersey last night.

Jersey led an amazing almost 17 years on this planet. We don’t know anything about his first 4 years, but for the last 13, Shannon, and then me too, tried our best to make his life the best. He took so many great walks, went on a lot of exciting adventures, smelled just about everything he could, ate so many tasty treats, and made some incredible dog and human friends along the way.

When we first met, Jersey didn’t like me. He didn’t like men in general and tried to protect Shannon from me. But we quickly became best friends, and then family. Shannon thinks that if it weren’t for Jersey, we would have never fallen in love. So that’s just another amazing thing he added to my life.

Jersey knew we were pregnant with Miles before we did, and protected Shannon all through both of her pregnancies. Then he would sit by the head and feet of both kids to protect them from life (until they learned how to grab and pull his fur). Miles learned to walk just so he could catch Jersey. He made sure I got out of the house at least 3 times a day and didn’t turn into an inanimate obese nightmare during covid. He used to sit with my bubbie and keep her company at the cottage during the summer. I could go on and on about all the amazing things he did for me and our family.

It will take me a while to get used to him not being here anymore, but he will never be out of my mind or my heart. His invisible leash will forever be attached to Shannon, Miles, Parker, and myself.

We love you so much, Jersey, and will miss you forever. I hope you’re running around, chasing squirrels, and eating so many treats with all your doggie friends now. Please don’t forget to look down on us every once in a while though. I know I’ll often look up and think about you.

For 13 years he has been by my side. I joke that Sheld never would have fallen in love with me if it hadn’t been for Jersey. My best memories involve my Jersey dog, my bubba, my baby dog. Whenever I was sick he wouldn’t leave my side. When I got pregnant with Miles I’m convinced he knew before I did, he became my shadow and would not let anyone come near me. We are certain Miles started to walk just so he could be closer to his JuJu. We loved him so fiercely.

Hi. It’s me. And it’s been a while.
Over the past few years I haven’t intentionally picked up my camera to shoot anything beyond my family as we live our lives. But I miss taking photos. I miss doing a lot of creative things.
So I thought I’d make 2026 a year when I start to do all of this again.
But I’ll start small.
So I’m starting with the @52frames weekly photography challenge.
This week’s theme is #52frames_selfportrait.
I thought this self portrait/selfie of me mostly in the dark was a good representation of how I’m starting the year. In the dark.
The end of 2025 was rough for me, so I kind of feel like I’m in the dark at the moment. But things can only get better and brighter from here.
So here’s to a new challenge and a new year!

If teaching, loving, caring, understanding, and being compassionate are worth celebrating, then @my.shananigans deserves a full blown parade. I’m so lucky that I get to parent Miles and Parker with her (because I definitely couldn’t do it without her).
We’re all so lucky to have her as our queen mama bear.
