RIP to Sonny Rollins, a towering figure of bebop and the one true Saxophone Colossus. Photos feature my favorite Rollins pieces in my collection. Newk’s Time is a black B repress and SC is a Quality reissue. The SC 7” is a Japanese 70s press, the Sonny Rollins & MJQ 7” is an original (only press with this cover), and the 10” featuring Monk was a freak find for $5 about 5 years ago.#sonnyrollins #recordcollecting by @4140jm

RIP Pepper the wonder dog. He was very sweet to the Marr family for a very long time. He is no longer in any pain, and we’re grateful for that. He will be greatly missed and remembered fondly. Pepper was a very good boy. ♥️ by @4140jm

On the turntable this morning is Flight to Denmark by Duke Jordan to accompany this heavy snowfall we’re having in Little Rock. Lovely piano trio release from 70s Steeplechase, this being a more recent reissue. On blustery, snowy days at the U of M Dearborn campus, I’d perch up on the 4th floor of the library and watch the snow accumulate on limbs of tall trees, while listening to this album and attempting to work through thermodynamics homework. ❄️ by @4140jm

Toshiko Akiyoshi - Amazing Toshiko Akiyoshi, originally released as a 10” on Norgan under the title Toshiko’s Piano in ‘54. This 12” Japanese release from ‘76 includes a live session at Newport from ‘57 on the B-side. This Newport Jazz Fest recording is also the A-side of the Toshiko & Leon Sash At Newport released by Verve in ‘58. The live cut feels very modern for its time, almost as if it could be an ECM release, Steve Kuhn comes to mind, particularly through the ensemble’s collective choices, most notably the drummer’s (Jake Hanna). Though both sides are vastly different, both recordings exemplify soft bebop filtered through the voice of a playful virtuoso. by @4140jm

I had a fantastic time at my first Goner Fest! The Sharp Pins! Des Demonas! Robyn Hitchcock! All incredible performances, the best live music I’ve seen all year. Shout out to Joe from the Pins for being nice and taking a dorky selfie with me ☺️. And can we talk about Kai, dressing freakbeat, psychy-mod style in 2025?
