Throughout the Spring semester, Photo+Film Majors Aija Bowditch and Izzy Rosenberg and Sculpture Major, Valeria Beauchamp, collaborated on a 42 person cyanotype banner supported by the VCUarts Undergraduate Research Grant.

The large-scale cyanotype banner, which was draped from the Pollak Building during graduation week, represented the significance of community, connections and resilience, particularly within the long tail of the COVID-19 Pandemic. 42 individuals each connected broadly through their shared communities: family, friends, peers, teachers, and more. An inter-generational diaspora linking their time and space together.

☀️With the sky and sun above at Maymont, they held still together for 15 minutes, their bodies forming
a momentary silhouette against the reactive fabric below them. Resulting in an exposure capturing a moment of shared grace, exuberance, connection, and possibility.

Congratulations Aija, Izzy, and Valeria for successfully taking on this ambitious project.

Installation from my semester at UMPRUM 🐚 don’t feel like naming this one, but I really enjoyed learning how to dye textiles with indigo during this process, and utilize a dirty sink (and if you want to hear the accompanying sound just message me, I can’t figure out how to add it on here hehe)🧜‍♀️

I call these girltifacts, a mess of materiality, embedded with conversations about love and reflection with chat gpt lol. The way these came together felt like Kintsugi, they kept breaking and I just kept filling the cracks with more spackle, I like when the mistakes become the art, when I lose control in the process.

There are yellow flowers I have never seen before
In between the highways of Virginia
How many hours on earth have I spent contemplating in a moving vehicle
Fall is here I can feel it and I’m scared
Everything is dying, crumbling breaking and exploding
All talking and never hearing, we all have our own vastly unique experiences and sometimes in laughter we can feel we are in the same world
Or when cradled in your lover’s arms
I chose to be free, the wind has been calling me
I must flee, break free from my crumbling skin
Reality crashing in, the black birds are following me
And all the numbers everywhere
Everything a risk and we only have one chance
When you find someone’s arms that feel like home you never want to let them go, but that love is in everything and it’s beautiful that you felt it with another soul
Love is infinite
And infinitely finding you
The light which circles and heals us all until the final moments when we become it once again
I feel everyone’s moans and aches
Running around in circles life feels so long and instantaneous, my child moans and cries
For a world soft enough to embrace, instead she creates her own, larger than life she mixes all the fabrics and runs free putting flowers behind everyone’s ear as she goes
The numbness creeps in and reminds her that there is not only light, and she must find her way… by @444archives
