“A topographic landscape, painted”

Discovering cities, embracing the architecture from the perspective of a painter, a skater or a graffiti writer is different, because they none of them would go to the same places as a typical tourist or traveler.
The way of observing their surrounding is different: every corner is a potential spot, an inspiration or something that leads to a new idea. It could be a new board trick or a way to scan the different structures and colours of those particular surfaces.

As someone who’s into painting, skateboarding and writing, you look for nichesand read the surfaces of buildings. You try to define the potential of theses urban landscapes.
Each surface is an opportunity to re-imagine or redefine it.

This brings us to the concept of how we thought about our project in Logroño, how can we intervene, how can we occupy or reclaim the city by applying our philosophy.
Where skaters, writers or artists are relates to where life is.
We saw this so many times already, areas that were abandoned that didn’t have much quality of life about them, there we were always the first people to discover the potential and to improvise and make the best out of it on a limited budget. All theses social micro interventions can’t really be planed, they grow naturally point to the potential of the location.
The creativity and endurance to try again and again, to fail, to make mistakes and to eventually achieve your goals. To be open to learning and enduring. The loyalty, cohesion, the exchange, it’s all a part of a philosophy that we absorbed by being part of the graffiti and skateboard scenes. This was supplemented and enhanced by our work as artists.

With this project we would like to give something back, to find the potential of this area in Logroño, to hopefully bring life back to this place. We want do this with our work ie. via the power of color. We want to broadcast the idea that this place is more than just a parking lot…

In October 2019 we were invited to complete our installation work with the art foundation @articasvalbard and Aktiv i Friluft to work within the “Project Isfjorden”. During this project, AiF has been running excursions to clean up Svalbard’s beaches. We joined and produced this installation as a public artwork in collaboration with the local community. A mobilé, consisting parts of the collected trash (buoys and ropes) is installed inside the installation. The installation can be used as a shelter during the cold svalbardian winters.

We participated next to the artists @kimnekarda and Floortje Zonneveld @arcticfogbow

We are glad to be part of the exhibition “Neighborhood 2025” at @kunsthausdresden
We made an exclusive installation of a movable painting as a preparation for a setdesign for a project called Hochhausmelodien, which will be a concert on a high rise building here in Dresden. The work we show at the Kunsthaus stands for itself and is a collaboration with our friend the artist @jan_brokof .
The exhibition ran until August 25th 2019.

„Nachbarschaftsaufstellung mit Vorhang“, 44flavours & Jan Brokof
(Neighborhood Constellation with Curtains)

Kunsthaus Dresden commissions Jan Brokof and the artist duo 44flavours to design a stage set inspired by high-rise buildings on Florian-Geyer-Straße. The installation for the exhibition Nachbarschaften 2025 scales the balcony dimensions to 1:1, with large, colorful wall surfaces reflecting the building's interior spaces. Painted canvas curtains are installed on four tracks across the entire wall, allowing for dynamic layering and rearrangement. As the curtains open and close, they create shifting patterns and transform the mural, revealing and concealing imagined interior spaces. The installation (15m x 4m) makes the mural and integrated shelving both visible and hidden, demonstrating how painted canvas curtains dynamically interact with one another. Serving as a prototype for balconies and facades in public spaces, this stage design for the Hochhausmelodien project engages with the public space in a multi-floor high-rise setting.

Naquela Esquina 44flavours × Origes 
São Luís, Bairro São Francisco 🇧🇷 
The esquina is a social node: different life realities meet here, news circulates, discussions arise. It’s a place of mixture and acceptance, often an informal refuge for those who find no space elsewhere. Energy can intensify, dynamics can shift, yet in everyday life it remains above all a space of encounter. This tension lives within the mural, a resonant body that translates emotion and rhythm into color and surface. Planned and improvised moments sit side by side, neither fully illustrative nor purely abstract. The image becomes part of the social fabric: it shapes its surroundings while being shaped by them in return. 
A esquina é um ponto de encontro social: diferentes realidades de vida se cruzam, notícias circulam, discussões emergem. É um espaço de convivência e aceitação, muitas vezes um refúgio informal para quem não encontra espaço em outros lugares. A energia pode se intensificar, as dinâmicas podem mudar, mas no cotidiano ela é, acima de tudo, um espaço de encontro. Essa tensão vive no mural, um corpo de ressonância que traduz emoção e ritmo em cor e superfície. Momentos planejados e improvisados convivem lado a lado, numa imagem que não é nem totalmente ilustrativa, nem puramente abstrata. A imagem torna-se parte do tecido social: molda seu entorno ao mesmo tempo em que é moldada por ele.

A studio visit at @44flavours in Berlin, featuring their new body of work TEILS TILES.

Sebastian Bagge and Julio Rölle have been working together as 44flavours for over 20 years. Their latest project, TEILS TILES, brings together 25 ceramic reliefs, currently on view at StudioTrouble™️ until October 23, 2026.

The exhibition is accompanied by an artist book of the same name.

TEILS TILES — our new artist book

We’re happy to share our new book TEILS TILES, published by @jb.institute alongside our exhibition at StudioTrouble™ in Berlin.

The book brings together 46 of our ceramic reliefs, moving between abstraction and figuration, intuition and precision. Detailed views of selected works offer a closer look at their surfaces, layers and material contrasts.

The publication is accompanied by a text by Cristine Merienne, developed through an exchange around the works, their visual language and perception, as well as an ambient mixtape by DJ KL from São Luís, created specifically for the project.

TEILS TILES is our second artist book with JB.Institute, following ENSEMBLE (2024).

Naquela Esquina — 44flavours × Origes

São Luís, Bairro São Francisco 🇧🇷
Born from a decade-long friendship, this mural came together without a fixed design. Origes, who usually plans with precision, embraced 44flavours’ improvisational process: painting shaped by dialogue, sound, and the rhythm of the street.
The esquina is a social node, a place of mixture and encounter. The nocturnal scene that emerged isn’t an illustration of the place, it’s a condensation of its atmosphere. Reggae, deeply rooted here, finds its correspondence in color and form.
The wall is not merely a surface, but an actor. The place paints as well.

A esquina é um ponto de encontro social, um espaço de convivência. A cena noturna que se formou não é uma ilustração do lugar, é uma condensação de sua atmosfera. O reggae, profundamente enraizado ali, encontra sua correspondência em cor e forma.

Besuch bei 44flavours in ihrem Studio in Berlin-Tiergarten, direkt an der Grenze zu Schöneberg.

44flavours, das sind Sebastian Bagge und Julio Rölle. Die beiden arbeiten seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten als Künstlerduo zusammen. Ihr Schaffen bewegt sich zwischen Malerei, Installation und Skulptur und erweitert die Malerei über die Fläche hinaus in Objekte, räumliche Konstruktionen und Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum.

Ihre eigenständige Bildsprache bewegt sich zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration. Charakteristisch ist dabei ihr komplexer Umgang mit Farbe: Zahlreiche Farbtöne, Kontraste und Nuancen treten gleichzeitig miteinander in Beziehung und erzeugen vielschichtige, immer wieder neu lesbare Kompositionen. Architektonische Formen, Naturelemente, Buchstaben und Alltagsobjekte tauchen auf, werden fragmentiert, neu kombiniert und in Beziehung zueinander gesetzt.

Aktuell ist ihre Soloausstellung TEILS TILES im Berliner StudioTrouble™️ zu sehen. Die Ausstellung zeigt 25 neue Keramikreliefs und wird von dem gleichnamigen zweiten Künstlerbuch begleitet, das bei JB.Institute erschienen ist. Nach ENSEMBLE (2024) ist TEILS TILES das zweite Künstlerbuch des Duos.

Außerdem ist ihre großformatige Wandmalerei Escape noch bis zum 11.10.2026 im TEMPO___K in Köln zu sehen.

DJ KL × 44flavours

For TEILS TILES, our new exhibition and book, DJ KL created an ambient mixtape inspired by the work, our process, our conversations and the different musical influences that have accompanied 44flavours over the years.

The mix was developed specifically for the project and is part of both the exhibition and the book, published by @jb.institute . Rather than assigning a track to each work, DJ KL approached the body of work as a whole, creating a continuous 30-minute loop that moves through different moods, rhythms and textures.

The mix will be playing throughout the opening tomorrow and is also included in the book via QR code.
