Stop Making Sense

I think I love Talking Heads because all the big and silly and intimate and subtle ways they find to say or play through feelings that otherwise have been said in music in far more clique ways. It’s like music about human experiences by aliens that have only experienced it through silent movies with ad breaks.

I have seen this film in cinemas multi times (all of which at PCC in London) so when the idea to make a poster presented itself I had to start figuring it out. This poster is a reworked frame from the film and structure wise is made to mirror the famous Uncle Sam ā€˜I want you!’ That Poster was used during World War I.

Go see this film in cinema with your friends, treat it like a concert, get involved x

Street Fighter @streetfightermovie

I made this poster for the new Street Fighter Movie after seeing the box art for Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition and wanted to bring some of M Bison’s Aura on the OG box art to the new movie.

I’m excited to see this film! I say this as someone that wasn’t sold on it until I saw the trailers and saw how much fun they were having with the adaptation as I believe that embodies the spirit of the game or how it feels to play in such a colourful vibrant world where characters back stories are by design a little cheesy.

As someone with siblings I feel like fighting games are a really important part of my gaming journey and my how I’ve learnt to connected with others because no matter the console, my age or the brutality of the in game displays of ass kicking it feels like fighting games never fail to bring people together.

Growing up these games were always multiplayer and were able to exist in a weird middle ground between skill, fun and pure chaos that allowed anyone to play which opened the door to endless hours of laughs, fights both digitally and… slightly less digitally and most importantly memories - I’ve met friends at parties through playing mortal kombat, smash bros was the only game I took with me to university and to this day I will gladly pick up the pad in any room it is offered no matter the fighting game.

I’m sure if you’ve read this far you want to know who I main on Street Fighter… I mean Ken’s last name is Masters right?

Bad Apples

I found this film at times to play out like a bit of a ghost story about the much talked about but very inconsistently ideated middle chapters between being a young adult and a respected adult.

Standing somewhere in the middle everything feels thrown together and life looks not like the grades you were given in school or the place you might end up once you are comfortable in your career but instead how you are able to perform and deliver for those on either side of you, how many pats on the back you might receive for being a good adult from peers noticing how you handle things, how many big life purchases you are making and just if you have your shit together or not. It’s kinda awful knowing no one is going to save you and wanting support makes others think you’re weak.

Things are may not be good and you are celebrated for getting on with it, keeping quiet and eating your vegetables - It feels like every part of Maria’s life is testing her to see if she is capable of handling her load and while the answer is firmly no it should never be yes as the answer should always be community and support. Really felt like I crawled inside a mental health advocate bag during this one and just wanted to say time out and have everyone talk through their feelings.

This landed way too close to home and I both liked that and felt very uncomfortable remembering stories I’ve heard from friends that are teachers or just generally getting a raw deal at work from those above them who either do not listen or do not care.

Go support this film!

If you can figure out why I used the Rene Magritte painting Son of Man for the my inspiration for this poster you’re my favourite person.

Digger

I just got out of my Vistavision screening of Digger, going into it I was a little worried based off of the word generally mixed reception and the word marmite bouncing around on socials that this film might be too heady or even worse potentially too middle of the road given its subject matter - i’ve found this to be a problem with a string of recent blockbusters unwilling to be about the issue beyond surface level set dressing that comes off landing like either light ā€˜makes you think’ cinema or ā€˜thoughts and prayers’ saviour narratives… so imagine my surprise when this film was an honest to god beautiful and big and ugly exploration and excavation on spectacle and delusion, mocking how flawed the modern feedback loop is from every angle. the world is ending and all we’re doing is going to work, adding to the destruction and finding new ways to express how we feel about it.

I really love that in a landscape where a lot of media will walk to the line and then make you do the rest of the work Digger is content to stop in its tracks several times wave you in closer and then say exactly what it means

Also to talk about performances this felt like a film where Cruise was the only human in a muppets film, with pangs of the Coen brothers movies and a sprinkling of Wes Anderson in it’s comedic timing and super in your face design choices. In many ways I feel like this is very much a film that was speaking my language.

Maybe it’s the recency bias, maybe it’s the vistavision screening but I loved this and had a great time with it.

Lanterns

I made this ahead of the Lanterns season finale this Sunday, I’ve really enjoyed watching this show over the last couple weeks and week on week I find myself more pulled into the characters as each episode finds small ways to make them more 3D and realised. I think just about any one watching the show is very much in that same boat but as me but as a long term fan of the green lanterns I am happy to see a shift for them in pop culture after more than a decade of them being the butt of a now well worn joke.

When Gunn announced how he would be casting his DCU he once said something about how he didn’t want to make his own remixed adaptations and iterations of loved characters and instead wanted to find actors that embodied the characters and felt like they stepped off the page and each and every week seeing John Stewart and Hal Jordan through Pierre and Chandler has been so cool and gives that statement more validity.

Hope this is just the beginning of this story as the corpsmen finally step into a brightest day after many a blackest night.

BOSSMAN

I made this for @jake_thompson55 ā€˜s upcoming short film Bossman starring @silcox_mark and @kieranusher!

I approached this wanting to capture the look of 70s crime film posters and was really taken with the poster for Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway by Arnaldo Putzu Which opened a doorway to a lot of Putzu’s work and ultimately the design of this poster.

Quite excited for this! šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

Clayface @clayfacemovie

Excited to look fear in the face this October, as someone that sits at the centre of the monster movies, dc comics and Mike Flanagan Venn diagram I am psyched to see where this one goes.

I styled this poster to look like older universal monster posters wanting to illuminate the tragedy, drama and scale present in those stories, going into the film I’m hoping for not only those things but body horror, funky VFX and of course I’ll be looking out for Liverpool filming locations.

If you could give any supervillain their own movie on the spot who would it be?

If I was pitching my own I think would be pretty fun to do a movie for Captain Cold and The Rogues that is played like the good, the bad and the ugly meets the fugitive with some jaws in there too - the villains are forced to work together to steal their gimmicks and trinkets back from the flash museum… while on the run from a guy whose whole thing is running.

Anyway, I don’t think the superhero film should continue dipping into more genres and being many things to many people as comics have been for decades and decades. I can’t wait to see this.

Digger @diggerthemovie

I can’t wait for this film, up there with camp miasma this is a new release that is seemingly made in a lab to be enjoyed by someone of my taste even down to the marketing leaning heavily on talking heads and Gorillaz needle drops seems all too perfect for me. As such I wanted to make a poster that made it another step closer to my interests - when looking at all the digger promotional material I’ve been trying to place what the pose reminded me of and only this past couple of days I’ve had the lightbulb moment that it is the Gunfighter Ballads album cover by Marty Robbins, if you have every played my favourite game Fallout: New Vegas I’m sure you’re familiar!

So as an Easter egg for reading his far I am going to share with you my I met Tom Cruise story, I used to manage a cinema in Leicester Square and on a random morning I had been told to be in early and not told why - moments before he arrived I found out via having to print off a document the crew were using (it was a massive crew to shoot an ad for MI.) Having met and interacted with my share of stars peripherally during my time in the job I was use to the energy of getting on things and not being overly direct with talent, Tom Cruise was not like that - he showed up and would learn and address everyone by name and it was super surreal (I’m sure for everyone involved) he asked where he was starting I said ā€˜you’ll start in screen 2’ and he said ā€˜probably not my first time in that screen hey?’ He’s a movie star guys - after this the crew went off to shoot the ad and I went to do my opening tasks until it was time for them to leave and I had to escort them out, in the elevator Tom turns to me and says ā€˜hey man, you good?’ Probably acknowledging it was weird for me to be in a lift with just him and an agent and having kept it cool the entire time was like ā€˜yeah, can I say I really love Top Gun: Maverick, it’s the coolest’ and without missing a beat Tom Cruise put his hand on my shoulder and said ā€˜Jordan buddy, we made that one for you’ this was such a obvious line but I was so gassed and immediately ran to my group chats.

Carrie

I can’t wait for this show to drop, I feel like some of the scariest pieces of media (for me) have started capturing and bottling up a feeling of a time in your life really well and while I know people that would watch some of the scariest horror films 10 times over they still struggled to sit through Eighth Grade, Funny Pages or Didi once as suddenly they weren’t just watching scary things happening to strangers but to a younger version of themselves, as more media trends this way (and as younger actors get better than ever) I hope it doesn’t just serve to make us thankful to never have to go to school again but to speak to people going through it and let them know they aren’t alone.

As dramatic as all teenage years are and tend to be I have never experienced anything as major as what Carrie White experiences during this story but it definitely has felt like that at times, whenever I return to this story I always find myself hoping it goes any other way and how if more conversation or kindness were afforded to young people maybe things would be different but I think that feeling while incredibly haunting makes it real.

Resident Evil

Poster for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil that comes out in the UK tomorrow! Super excited to see this one in cinemas.

As someone that only has memories of seeing my brother play through 4 when I was younger and briefly playing through parts of the games around other people’s houses through the years I am super excited to step into this world and love this as a set up to do so.

This poster is inspired by the original poster for The Great Escape, that poster really sells chaos and makes the crowd look so dynamic that I wanted to sell that here while flipping the feeling on its head - all while retaining the older movie poster look.

VisionQuest @visionqueest

The minute I watched the trailer for the upcoming Vision show this poster came to me, super interested to see how it moves this character forward from the end of Wandavision, how Vision reconciles with Ultron and how that shapes his relationship with Tommy - families amirite? This one will be special I’m sure.

Posting this today as there is 1 month to go! love this character and have done since the famous Tom King run about 10 years ago (Mister Miracle is my favourite comic so connect the dots there).

Also more than excited to see @laurenmoraisss in action!! šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļøāœØ

Donnie Darko

When I heard this was coming back to cinemas I got really excited about the potential of seeing it on the big screen and getting to live it again for the first time in a couple years.

This poster is structured around the Forbidden Planet poster from the 1950s while sprinkling in a couple details for you all. I think this poster weirdly feels like the closest I’ve come to the way I would draw in my sketch book during my A Levels in 2016-2018, if you were there I’m sure you can see it. I thought a lot about that period of my life while making this.

This film means a tonne to me really coming to me in the back half of my teenage years and reflecting a lot of crisis that found me in that time as I dealt with the loss of a friend and then buckling under anxiety attacks while trying to finish my last year of school.
This film while otherworldly and eerie didn’t feel too far removed from what me and other people I knew were experiencing inside their homes and heads at that time and I was just grateful to feel my way through that time with this film and it’s music.

The last time I saw this film was in a really strange screening in Liverpool in October 2021, if I remember correctly it was in a random pub, there several smaller tv screens throughout the pub playing the movie, there were two themed drinks and although sold out the atmosphere was super still and all the tables around the pub sat in in silence locked in on the film. If I hadn’t shared this memory with a group of friends I would be convinced it didn’t happen as it was so surreal.

Anyone wanna come see the 4K release for this with me?
