Maintaining Readiness.

This week The NorthEastGunners have deployed on Exercise ‘SUNDERLAND DAGGER 24’. This exercise is crucial in ensuring that the Regiment continue to maintain a high state of readiness in order to support 7LMBCT commitment to ARF.

This deployment to Otterburn Training Area will serve as a confirmatory exercise for the Battery Commanders to test their Sub-Units; from BCS to technical firing; achieving currency and competency within their roles, maximising the Regiments deployability.

Want to learn more about The Northeast Gunners? Keep an eye out for future posts explaining our available roles in detail.

4RA recently ran a Gunner Command Systems Operators course.

The course is the first course that Artillery Command Systems (ACS) soldiers undertake post initial training and enables them to operate in the Bty Command Post, Fire Direction Centre or Joint Fires Cell as a signaller.

These Gunners will soon be deploying in role on Ex VENIN STRIKE to test their newly learnt skills. by @4_regt_ra

ARCHER

The Archer has arrived at 4 Regt RA 💥

88 Arracan Battery are the first Battery at 4 Regt RA to receive the Archer and are undergoing conversion from the L118 Light Gun.

Ex VENIN STRIKE in November 2026 will see the Archers being fired for the first time by members of 4 Regt RA.

This marks a new chapter in Regimental history and will enable commitments to Op Cabrit (E) over the coming years. by @4_regt_ra

[STRONGER TOGETHER]

Last week, the Royal Gun Salute in the heart of York provided the backdrop for something equally important - bringing together our Emergency Services, Resilience and Defence partners from across the North of England.

Following the salute marking the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III at York Museum Gardens, partners joined us at The Grand, York, for a panel discussion exploring Home Defence, preparedness and what the changing defence landscape means for resilience across the North.

With insight from Helen West, Home Defence Team; Sarah Moor, Resilience Lead for the North of England; Gary Hooks, Preparedness Lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council; and Colonel Peter Stitt, Commander HQ North, one message stood out:

We are stronger when we collaborate.

Understanding each other’s roles, sharing experience and building trusted relationships before they are needed strengthens our collective ability to respond when resilience is tested.

A huge thank you to all our partners who joined us.

Together, we can learn faster, respond better and build a more resilient North.

Yesterday the Regiment came together to remember the life of Gnr Samuela ‘’Sammy’’ Vanua - 3/29 (Corunna) Battery.

Gnr Vanua was killed by an improvised explosive device in the town of Ad Dayr, Iraq on 4 September 2006.

Joining 4 Regiment in 2002, Gunner Vanua was a soldiers’ soldier who demonstrated clear potential for early promotion. His commitment and professionalism was apparent on operations. Serving as a rifleman in Northern Ireland in 2003 and then in Basra in the winter of 2004/2005, he was courageous, utterly dependable and ready to tackle any challenge. It is testament to Gunner Vanua’s robust character and selfless dedication that he volunteered to return to Iraq with 12 Regiment in 2006 where he was sadly killed.

Known as ‘Sammy’, his cheeky grin characterized his mischievous good humour that endeared him to all who knew him. Popular throughout the Regiment, he was fantastic company at work and socially. He was often described as the life and soul of the party. A strong team player off and on the sports pitch, his passion was Rugby. Having represented the British Army (Germany), he was key to the Regiment’s successes over numerous seasons.

Gnr Samuela Vanua was a superb soldier who was immensely proud to be part of the British Army, the Royal Artillery and 4 Regiment. Our thoughts and prayers are with his his family and his friends in Fiji 🇫🇯who feel his loss most keenly. He will be sadly missed by all ranks of 4 Regiment and by all those fortunate enough to have called him a friend. Sammy, you are still missed.

You are still remembered.
And you will always be one of our own.
Gone but never forgotten.
Lest we forget. by @4_regt_ra

Yesterday, 4th Regiment Royal Artillery came together to pay its final respects to Gunner Mason Hatton at his funeral.

Gnr Hatton served with 88 Arracan Battery after joining the Regiment in November 2023, having previously served as a Trooper with the Royal Tank Regiment. During his time with the Regiment, he deployed on Exercise Allied Spirit in Germany and proudly took part in the Windsor Castle Guard as part of the Regiment’s commitment to Public Duties Reinforcement Company.

Remembered as a valued member of the Battery Command Post, Gnr Hatton’s positivity, professionalism, and character left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He was respected by his peers and will be greatly missed.

The Regiment extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended the service to honour Gnr Hatton’s life and service, and continues to hold his partner, family, friends, and comrades in its thoughts.

A special thank you is also extended to the Royal Artillery Association (RAA) for its continued support, compassion, and dedication to the Royal Artillery family. The Association’s unwavering commitment to serving personnel, veterans, and bereaved families is deeply appreciated.

Rest easy, Gunner Hatton. Your service, friendship, and dedication will never be forgotten.
