Something a little different coming from 4 Front 2 Adventure… free Halloween fun for children in Liskeard! 🎃👻

On Friday 30th and Saturday 31st October, I’ll be hiding 13 Halloween-themed painted pebbles around town. Find one, keep your pebble and collect a FREE children’s activity pack from the Bargain Box Liskeard on Bay Tree Hill. More details nearer the time!

Huge thanks to Geoff and everyone at the Bargain Box for being our collection point and helping make this happen. Geoff’s a diamond! 💗 Link to The Bargain Box Got Shop in the comments.

The Bargain Box is also organising and funding their own FREE Halloween fancy dress party at Great Trethew Manor. All their hard work — I’m just helping spread the word! See their poster for the details. 🎃

I’ll keep you updated here about my Halloween pebble hunt, and the Bargain Box will share updates about their party.

And the mysterious figure in the orange mist? That’s an old photo of me in my powerchair, getting into the spooky spirit! 🤣👻

Loves,
Jayne 🍂🍁🎃

A little bit of the reality behind the adventures. 💗

Yesterday morning, pain meant I couldn’t move enough to get to a meeting. It was one I really wanted to attend, to help move things along.

Having to cancel left me feeling like I’d let people down. I knew I couldn’t help it, but knowing that didn’t make the guilt disappear.

The meeting still went ahead; I was just unable to be a part of it.

Chronic illness is sometimes mistaken for an excuse to get out of doing things. What people don’t always see is how much we want to be there, and how frustrating it is when our bodies won’t let us. It can take a toll on friendships and relationships, as well as on the person living with it.

I’m lucky to have people who understand and a good support system. It didn’t take away yesterday’s pain or how I felt about missing things, but that understanding is priceless. 💗

After painkillers and some time, I managed to get up and make it to the second meeting. Still feeling icky and hurting lots, but there I was, waiting for it to start. Looking a little pale and a little worse for wear! 💪🤣

Of course, the only classy place to have a meeting was in Spoons…

On the brighter side, I’d had my hair cut over the weekend so it’s easier to manage, the autumn clothes are out, and we’re officially into scarf season… and leg warmers!

My body might have been having a difficult day, but I was still loving autumn. 🍁🍂🎃

I’m missing this so much already. 💗

Wheeling along this ridge last week, I felt a sense of excitement I haven’t had in a long time. The big sky, the hills ahead and the sheer joy of being up there, seeing where my wheels could take me. I felt alive.

I’m paying for it now. My body isn’t doing so well, and there’s plenty of resting and recovering happening behind the photos.

But looking back, every pain, creak and crack was worth it to me. That feeling of freedom and excitement is something I’ll carry with me long after this week.

I’d do it a hundred times over.

For now, my body needs the sofa… but my mind is still up on that ridge. 💗

What an amazing time we’ve had. 💗

We’ve visited old houses, an Anglo-Saxon castle and a Norman church. We’ve been up big hills, come back down them… and slipped down bits of them too! 🤣

There’s been rocky terrain that shook my body right down to its bones, muddy tracks and gentle walks through scenery straight out of a Jane Austen novel. Where’s Mr Darcy when you need him? 🤣

And I’ve had an absolute blast.

We’ve spent time together, out in nature, taking in the views and appreciating just how much our beautiful world has to offer. Big skies, little details, fresh air and memories I’ll be smiling about for a long time.

My body is very firmly requesting a rest now, so it’s time to relax, recover and enjoy looking back through far too many photos. These are just a few of my favourites! 📸

There’s a busy few months ahead and plenty to look forward to with 4 Front 2 Adventure. For now, though, I’m taking these memories back to the sofa with me. 💗

I’ve been looking at all-terrain powerchairs lately, and something keeps jumping out at me.

Where are the women?

Look at the marketing for rugged and all-terrain powerchairs and it’s so often men: outdoors, tackling rough ground, exploring forests, getting muddy and pushing what their chairs can do.

Then look at the way women using powerchairs are so often portrayed.

Dresses. Fashion. Shopping. Holidays. Nice cafés. Lifestyle shots.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things, and that represents plenty of women. But it doesn’t represent all of us.

Some of us want trousers, hiking boots and mud on our tyres.

We want woodland, rocks, coastlines and trails. We want to find out what’s around the next corner — and occasionally discover that the next corner was a bloody terrible idea. 😂

Women want all-terrain powerchairs too.

I’ve actively looked for women being represented in this part of the powerchair world, and there just don’t seem to be many of us visible.

And that matters.

Women who want this kind of life should be able to see themselves represented in it too.

So here’s my challenge to the all-terrain powerchair industry:

Show us the women getting muddy too. 👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️🌿

And if you know women already out there doing this — tag them. I want to follow their adventures.

Let’s get more women, more wheels, more rocky roads and more mud on our feeds. 😂👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️🌿

I think I can safely say this was the steepest hill I’ve ever taken a powerchair up.

At 425 metres (1,394 ft), the Worcestershire Beacon is nearly half the height of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike — and it was EPIC!!! 👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️⛰️

And it was definitely not easy terrain for any chair.

Steep paths, rocks, mud, wheels getting jammed between rocks… and my @quantumrehabuk 4Front 2 was an absolute bloody beast.

She just kept easing her way up.

There were a couple of occasions where progress required a little bit of jumping and jiggling around in my seat to help us get ourselves out of a stuck situation. 😂 But between me and her, we got out of every single one.

And we made it up there.

The views were OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Then, apparently having learned absolutely nothing about my own sense of self-preservation, I got even more adventurous on the way back down. 😂

I spotted another muddy hill and decided to have a go.

We got partway up… started losing grip… and then began sliding backwards down it.

A young couple watching apparently thought they were about to witness a catastrophe. My husband was panicking.

Me?

I was laughing all the way back down. 🤣

I know how incredibly stable my chair is. So far I’ve never managed to tip her over — although at this rate you’d be forgiven for thinking I’m actively trying. 😂

But bloody hell, what an adventure.

The effort was worth it. The views were worth it. And the memories from this one will stay in my heart for a lifetime. 🩷

And once again, one thing has become VERY apparent…

I need those bigger, grippier tyres. 🤣

One of our adventures while we’re away took us to Eastnor Deer Park (@eastnor_castle) — and this definitely wasn’t just a gentle little wheel around the park. 😂

My body hasn’t been playing particularly nicely lately and pain has been pretty rubbish, but I wanted an adventure. And this one delivered.

We headed across the deer park to see whether we could make it up towards the obelisk.

It was steep, rocky and loose under foot and wheel.

And obviously I thought, let’s see how far we can get. 😂

The hill was STEEP and the @QuantumRehabUK 4Front 2 spent a good twenty minutes wheel-spinning and trying her absolute best to find some grip. I genuinely think I’d have got to the top with the proper grippy Quantum off-road wheels and tyres, but eventually the loose stone won.

I’ll have to start saving for those wheels and tyres. 🤣

Then came the slight incident involving a very steep hill, soft sandy mud and gravel…

Because I wouldn’t give up, the chair started sliding backwards, so I steered her off sideways to avert an accident.

Turns out gravity doesn’t particularly care about brakes when the ground underneath your tyres is moving too. 😂

Completely my own doing and thankfully no harm done!

By the end we’d covered over five miles — although Strava won’t agree because somebody (me 🙄) forgot to start it until we were already over a mile in. 😂

After all those hills, rocks, rough ground and a ridiculous amount of wheel-spinning, I checked the controller…

Only 20% battery used!! Still 80% left — that is bleddy good going!!

My 4Front is a machine!! 👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️💪

I didn’t make it to the obelisk this time, but an adventure doesn’t become a failure because you don’t reach what you originally aimed for.

We explored. We tested ourselves. We found the limit of the ground. 😂

And we had a bloody good adventure doing it. Sohhhh much fun!!!

We’ve escaped for a few days and, while the weather is being kind to us, we’re making the most of it!

The camera’s out, my 4Front 2 powerchair is getting some more miles under its wheels and we’ve already been off exploring — with plenty more planned. 🌿📷

I’ve got photos to sort and places to tell you about, but for now we’re just enjoying being away, getting outside and seeing where the wheels take us.

Adventures are happening… 😁🩷

A little while ago I had five unopened bottles of shower gel that weren’t going to get used.

Rather than leave them sitting in a cupboard, I thought: what else could they become?

A shopping trip later, they became five women’s hygiene packs to give to people that genuinely need them. I also had some food I could pass on, so today everything was loaded onto the 4Front 2 and taken down to the Lighthouse Community Centre in Liskeard.

And that’s really the whole point of this post.

Not “look what I did.” More “what could we all do?”

It doesn’t have to cost loads. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. Maybe you’ve got unopened toiletries sitting in a cupboard. A few tins you won’t use. Something you could donate. An hour you could give. Or perhaps just an opportunity to do something kind for somebody that happens to cross your path.

And it doesn’t have to be something you give. Sometimes your little something might simply be a little bit of your time.

Small things can make a difference. So if you can, let’s make our little corner of the world a kinder place for us all. 🩷

IT’S BEEN A LITTLE QUIET ON THE ADVENTURE FRONT… 👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️🌿

I haven’t been feeling too good lately, so the wheels haven’t been getting quite as dirty as I’d like!

Sometimes adventure has to wait while my body catches up — and that’s just part of life around here.

But it won’t be quiet for long… 👀

We’re going away soon, and I’m very much hoping there’ll be plenty of exploring, fresh air, new places and opportunities to get the 4Front 2 properly filthy again. 😂

For now I’m taking things as they come, doing the little things when I can, and looking forward to getting back out there.

The adventure hasn’t stopped. It’s just having a little intermission — with some quieter, less energetic, indoorsy adventures happening while I recover. 🩷

Slightly older photo.,,

SAYING GOODBYE TO AN OLD ADVENTURE BUDDY 🩷

I’m saying goodbye to my old powerchair.

She’s spent the last year sitting in the garage gathering dust since my 4Front 2 came into my life — and Dave has been hinting he’d quite like his garage back. 🤣

But looking at her, I realised just how much life we’ve lived together.

Those wheels have been places.

They’ve taken me to the pebble beach at Lindisfarne and all the way around the island.

They’ve carried me around Coniston Water, Castlerigg and so many other beautiful places in the Lakes.

They’ve stomped into old Welsh castles and battlements, explored places all over the country and travelled hundreds of miles with me in cars, coaches and trains.

They carried me through the Wheely Haunted years and then into Wheely Accessible — yes, this chair has even been on ghost-hunting adventures with me. 👻😂

She’s stood beside me while I’ve given accessibility talks to rooms full of people. She’s been on adventures, investigations, camping trips and more days out than I could possibly remember.

And it wasn’t all big adventures.

She got me around my home, to the local shops and gave me independence on completely ordinary days. When my body didn’t feel like it could keep going, she gave me the support to do it.

That’s what mobility equipment can mean.

It isn’t just metal, batteries and wheels. Sometimes it’s the difference between watching life happen and being able to take part in it.

Eventually my needs changed and my 4Front 2 opened another chapter — more terrain, more exploring and a whole new collection of adventures.

Now the old girl is going to someone new, and I’m really pleased about that. She deserves more than gathering dust. Hopefully she’ll give her new human some freedom, independence and a few bloody good adventures of their own. 🩷

Thank you for every mile, every memory and every adventure.

Go make some new ones together. 👩🏼‍🦼‍➡️🩷

And Dave…

Congratulations on getting your bit of garage back. 🤣 by @4front2adventuring
