“David Ireland died the year before and the status of his Victorian house was still uncertain. Since 1975 he transformed his home at 500 Capp Street into a totalizing conceptual artwork, but it wasn’t clear yet that it could be saved; it needed a new foundation, extensive stabilization, a huge influx of money. Just before you’d moved away from San Francisco, Paul and Isabelle had arranged for a secret dinner there with Ireland’s close friends Amy and Jeff, and Rebecca, his longtime assistant. They relished in describing the mythology of every object, each surface—their memories of being there over the years. It was the first dinner in the house since Ireland’s death, and sitting in the narrow candlelit dining room, surrounded by animal skulls and tabletop piles of concrete, had felt like a séance.” - Jarrett Earnest, Valid Until Sunset

After the dinner, Earnest moved to New York, but he and Trachtenberg kept in touch through handmade postcards. Now a personal entry point into Trachtenberg’s current exhibition, Abstract Objects of Devotion, these postcards accumulate alongside her correspondence with David Ireland from decades earlier. On Saturday, October 10th, Trachtenberg and Earnest return to the place where they first met to discuss the postcard project, the exhibition, and their artistic process.

Performance: 6:30–8:30 PM

Presented in conjunction with Vogt’s exhibition The Ringing in My Eyes, Room/Tone brings together Bay Area sound performance artists Josh Churchill, Ven Voisey, and Ava Koohbor for an evening of live, site-responsive sound unfolding throughout the David Ireland House.

Working with electronic and acoustic instruments, field recordings, voice, effects, tape, microphones, and artist-made instruments, the performers will activate the house through overlapping passages of improvised sound. Rather than unfolding as a conventional seated performance, sound will emerge from different points within the house, with some performers moving through its rooms over the course of the evening.

We are excited to announce two programs for Amy Trachtenberg’s Abstract Objects of Devotion, currently on view at 500 Capp Street.

On Wednesday September 9th, Amy Trachtenberg and former director of The Poetry Center, Steve Dickison will host an evening of readers who will be drawing from Ireland’s archive of writing, sharing his musings and questions on travel and friendship, along with excerpts of his thinking as he conceptualized works, including the reimagining of his own house at 500 Capp Street. Readers include Leah Levy, Kevin CK Lo, Tuğçe Evirgen Özmen, Steve Dickison, and Amy Trachtenberg.

On Saturday, October 10th, Trachtenberg is joined by writer and curator Jarrett Earnest for a conversation. Throughout Abstract Objects of Devotion, Trachtenberg and Earnest exchange postcards combining original photographs, collage, and writing. Sent and received through the mail, the postcards accumulate within the exhibition alongside Trachtenberg’s correspondence with David Ireland from decades earlier. As one exchange gathers alongside another, the correspondence traces friendship, artistic dialogue, and the continuation of ideas and relationships across time and distance. For this public program, Trachtenberg and Earnest return to the place where they first met to discuss the evolving postcard project, its relationship to the exhibition, artistic process, and everyday life.

Happy belated Birthday Mildred Howard!
Mildred Howard, renowned artist, has had a decades-long relationship with David Ireland and his house. Ireland served as Howard’s graduate thesis advisor, and from there they shared a mutual admiration for each other’s artistic sensibilities and point of view.
Howard has been a champion of Ireland’s and has continuously supported 500 Capp Street and our work to continue his artistic legacy. Alongside having her work included in many group exhibitions at the house, she had two major solo shows at 500 Capp Street: Collaborating with the Muses Part One and Two. Some of the works in that show are now on view at Mildred Howard’s retrospective Poetics of Memory, on view at the Oakland Museum of California until October 18th.

500 Capp Street is also happy to be supporting the publication of Poetics of Memory, a compendium of her lifetime of works.

A few tickets are still available for the Twilight Tour tomorrow evening (Thu 8/20 6:30-8:30) at @500CappStreet (ticket link in their bio)

The evening starts 6:30 with drinks in the dining room. The tour begins at 7 with selected stops around the David Ireland House where Amy Trachtenberg and I will be offering some background on a few of the nearly 50 works on display.

I’ve created several site-specific installations that take on an even moodier tone as the light wanes, including a special spotlight directed on to my first ever, outdoor sculpture located on the patio.
.
This is a $50/ticket fundraiser and is a great way to find out more about the show directly from the artists along wth background about David Ireland and his one-of-a-kind conceptual treatment of the house.

The Twilight Tour is back. 500 Capp Street will open our doors after hours with a guided tour of Amy Trachtenberg’s Abstract Objects of Devotion and Andy Vogt’s The Ringing in My Eyes, as the shows bathe in the shifting light of sunset. Vogt’s wood lath sculptures create long, moving shadows along the golden walls at sunset. The study’s closet opens to Trachtenberg’s glowing cobalt glass embedded in a wrought iron bed frame. And, both artists will be present to talk about their work and their engagement with the house and archives.

Thank you everyone for coming to the opening of our two exhibitions, Amy Trachtenberg: Abstract Objects of Devotion ( @amyclairet ) and Andy Vogt: The Ringing in My Eyes ( @andy_vogt_studio ). It's always a joy to open our space to the public, and we were so moved by the turnout to celebrate these two Bay Area gems.
