Working on Transformation
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We are delighted to share the news that the team of @51n4e Acte, @omgeving.be, @hub_architecten , and @restarchitecten has been selected for Europark Halewijn! The City of Antwerp and Woonhaven are joining forces to realize a master plan on the scale of the Europark district, in parallel to the architectural project for the Halewijn pilot zone.

The proposal looks at the district on multiple scales, and allows for an incremental realization. The modernist social housing district on Antwerp’s Left Bank will become a mixed-use neighborhood with the qualities of a ‘soft city’.

Antwerps ‘Linkeroever’ is a place where infrastructure is present in excess, but human scale is lacking. How can this environment, characterized by grand gestures, be transformed from the smallest scale? Our proposal values the district as a link between the dense city center and the Scheldt Valley National Park. The landscape comes close to the home thanks to soft and green connections and spaces. New and existing buildings for housing and amenities follow at times the existing grid but at specific locations reoriented. The smallest scale of living receives attention from the very beginning, thanks to integrated anthropological and spatial research in collaboration with Ruth Soenen of Simply Community.

We look forward to contributing, with this ambitious project, to the realization of affordable and social housing in livable and well-connected neighborhoods in Antwerp and Flanders.

We are happy to share that we have started a social spatial study on the station neighbourhood of Tienen, supported by the Flanders concept subsidy.

The Tienen station is a historical and strategic mobility hub with over 4000 daily commuters. The dense residential fabric of the neighbourhood stands in strong contrast with its edges. While the inner area lacks public space, the edges are defined by recognizable public infrastructure and meeting places such as the city park, playgrounds and the square in front of the station. Until now, the emphasis has been on the master plan of the other side of the station. With this concept study, the station environment is being approached as more than just a spatial challenge: it is a search for identity, cohesion, and a future for a diverse and vulnerable urban neighbourhood in full transformation.

It’s this integrated approach that we are most excited about. In previous projects it has led us to the development of Space for Diversity (51N4E Acte and Simply Community, Ruimte voor Diversiteit, 2024) via the Bouwmeester label. A methodology that focuses precisely on aligning spatial interventions with the social reality and the everyday use of the place.

In collaboration with Simply Community and @plantenhoutgoed for @stadtienen and Flanders.

This week, the @chiesi_gardens project is being launched to the public in Parma. The transformation of Chiesi’s historic pharmaceutical site is moving forward, opening up a former industrial complex to new relationships between architecture, landscape, work and the city. A collaboration between @51n4e and @ten_studio, the project builds on the existing fabric of the site, transforming its buildings and landscape into a more open and interconnected environment.

Invited for a competition in 2022, we have been working extensively together with the team of Chiesi on the design, programmation, re-use of buildings as an urban landscape for Parma.

The site is strongly rooted in Parma’s San Leonardo district. It rethinks the boundaries between public and private space thanks to the creation of two large gardens, the repurposing of found spaces and the addition of new volume. The site becomes a collection of inside and outside spaces that offer different types of spatial conditions, climatic zones and nature in the neighborhood. Buildings were approached with light renovation, necessary retrofit and adaptive new construction while vegetation ranges from native rare species to resistant and climatically adapted ones, shaped and designed via different models for maintenance.

The programme, existing of the impulse-hub, neighborhood hub, food hub and the offices of Chiesi Italia, offer space for start-ups in the pharmaceutical sector, neighbourhood associations, general public and Chiesi’s staff. With this transformation, we hope to turn the site into a sustainable, green and accessible destination, attracting diverse audiences and species.

Currently, we are working on the final and technical design together with @esa_engineering and local parties.

A few weeks ago, just before the summer holidays, our team came together again for our yearly summer visits. This collective moment lets us share the experiences accumulated across our different projects. It’s a day for the whole team to see our projects in person and get to know their environments. This year, we took the opportunity to go to Limburg and visit C-mine, the Noord-Zuid Limburg bicycle bridge and the construction site of one of the canopies that will serve as a trambus stop on the high performant public transport line.

51N4E has been active in Limburg for over two decades now, with projects ranging from the redevelopment of a former mining site to transport infrastructure, to research on energy transition and educational environments. Our projects in Limburg have helped us to develop our methodology that builds on existing conditions, addresses multiple challenges simultaneously, and leaves space for future adaptations. The three sites we visited embody this apporach and are featured in our chapter “Negotiating Infrastructure,” our approach to infrastructure and the potential qualities it can bring.

Before getting fully back into the rhythm of work, we wanted to share a few images from this trip and express our gratitude to our entire team. We hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved rest.

The bicycle bridge is part of the larger project Noord Zuid Limburg, which involves the research, design, and implementation of public transport, cycling infrastructure, and intelligent road connections. The project focuses on the long-term future while developing short-term actions that begin to enable change, with the bridge being one of these actions. The bridge integrates the landscape and different uses, considering not only the territorial scale but also its impact and opportunities locally.

🏆 WINNING PROPOSAL

“Tokë Buke”
51N4E + Jeshile + Blerta Kambo

Selected unanimously by the International Jury and also chosen by the Student Jury, “Tokë Buke” proposes a vision in which the future campus of Aleksandër Moisiu University grows together with the land, water, landscape, and community.

Rather than treating nature as a backdrop, the project makes it the foundation of campus life, transforming water management, productive landscapes, and public space into catalysts for learning, innovation, and everyday life.

More than a masterplan, “Tokë Buke” is a long-term vision for a university that grows in harmony with its territory and becomes a new engine for the future of Durrës.

🎥 Discover the winning proposal.

🏆 PROJEKTI FITUES

“Tokë Buke”
51N4E + Jeshile + Blerta Kambo

🎥 Zbuloni projektin fitues.

EN: Two of our Root projects (Ferme de Chaudron and Asiat Park) feature in the shortlist for the LILA – @landezine_com International Landscape Awards 2026.

Root represents the collaborative framework where @51n4e and @plantenhoutgoed merge strategic urban design with long-term ecological stewardship and governance. Rather than delivering singular spatial interventions, Root focuses on designing low-threshold, continuous, evolving processes of living environments. We cultivate both the adaptive infrastructures and the shared engagement needed to sustain ecosystems over generations. Joining forces means cultivating each aspect as much the relationship between them.

Ferme de Chaudron is a project by 51N4E Cast and Plant & Houtgoed for Bruxelles Environnement.

Asiat Park is a project by 51N4E Acte and Plant & Houtgoed for the City of Vilvoorde and Onkruid.

You’re invited to (a)wake for what grows

We’re pleased to announce the third edition of Stage, the residency programme of @51N4E at @track.brussels

Over the past months, Lara De Schutter (@nunya__bizz) has been gardening, observing and documenting the spontaneous ecology that has taken hold on the concrete slab of the demolished Centre de Communication Nord, in Brussels’ North Quarter, now occupied by Place Noord. The work attends to what has gathered in the breach between demolition and redevelopment, and will likely disappear in the next construction cycle.

On Monday 15 June, the concertation commission examines the permit for the four towers planned for this slab. The exhibition attends to what the development model doesn’t know how to measure. It asks which beings count, and to whom. Whether sealed urban ground needs to be built on to be alive. Whether the next cycle could make space for what is already here.

With artist @elise__guillaume, they have made a soundscape of the living slab, wind, water, roots in the gravel, broadcast live through the speakers of Place Noord. The CCN was built to move people through. The slab now holds what stays.

The exhibition runs 11 to 13 June, according to the programme in the highlight. In the months ahead, a series of small conversations will follow. If you’d like to take part, write to stage@51n4e.com.

A strategic vision for the historic ribbon of Bleijerheide-Nulland, developed in collaboration with Simply Community and @plantenhoutgoed for the municipality of Kerkrade and the @college_van_rijksadviseurs within the BuurtSaam trajectory.

Weaving extensive anthropological and spatial research, the project explores how a healthy and social neighbourhood can be fostered through the transformation of public space. Guided by the concept of Village / City / House, the proposal seeks a dynamic balance between encounter, discovery and retreat.

The strategy focuses on strengthening neighbourhood connections through targeted greening, depaving, improving walkability and creating spaces for everyday interaction. Along the ribbon, a series of interventions transforms underused and car-dominated spaces into welcoming public environments that support both social life and moments of calm. Beyond the ribbon itself, the vision proposes a new future for Dr. Ackensplein and Henri Jonasplein, introducing a network of smaller, human-scaled public spaces that reconnect uses, residents and local initiatives.

The proposal is developed through a series of urban interiors, a methodology that combines everyday experiences with strategic interventions in visual narratives, allowing for dialogue with inhabitants and users about the transformation of their neighbourhood.

Over the past year and a half, the first of many HOV Hasselt-Maasmechelen canopies has slowly been taking shape. The experimental timber structure, developed by 51N4E in collaboration with Tractebel and BAS (Dirk Jaspaert), has almost been completed, with finishing works still to be carried out.

Together with the trambus stop infrastructure, the project HOVHM formerly known as Spartacus line 2, connect Hasselt and Maasmechelen by linking various city centres and key transit nodes. While each canopy is recognisable through its shared architectural language and identity, every structure has been designed to adapt to the specific contexts and requirements encountered along the new transit line.

The project not only accommodates the functions of a transit and waiting space, but also provides a sense of spatial hospitality, comfort, and connection to its surroundings.

Invitation — @51n4e is pleased to present its new Chapter, Negotiating Infrastructure, tomorrow at @librairie_volume

NEGOTIATING INFRASTRUCTURE — Book Presentation
Wednesday May 6, 2026, 19h30
Volume Bookstore, 47 Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, 75003 Paris
Free entry, subject to capacity
‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌
EN: Issue 4 of the Chapter series brings together research and practice to explore how infrastructure can act as a driver of urban transformation. Developed through the work of 51N4E and NEWROPE – Chair of Urban Transformation at ETH Zürich, the publication reflects on an infrastructural approach to design.

Through eight projects by 51N4E and four design perspectives developed by NEWROPE, the publication makes a case for investing in an infrastructural shift within urban design. Rather than starting from scratch, this approach builds on existing conditions, addresses multiple challenges simultaneously, and leaves space for future adaptations.

Both sensitive and bold, pragmatic and imaginative, an infrastructural design approach offers stability in complex environments while opening pathways for new uses and the appropriation of spaces. By presenting a diverse range of projects and reflections, this issue demonstrates how design can expand its impact, and how infrastructure can move beyond functionality to embody shared cultural and societal values.
