A culture dispersed, a memory worn thin.

Drawing on her Circassian-Turkish heritage, Selin Nisa Açıkel approaches portraiture as a temporal condition, tracing how memory persists without a fixed centre: partial, fragile, enduring in fragments, in gesture, in what remains.

Z.T. Nguŷen, currently on view in “On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name”

__

Constructed from folded letter-size sheets of paper, Nguŷen’s drawings carry migration, secrecy and touch in the creases themselves. The graphite and acrylic figures, set on ominous glowing stages, don’t necessarily tell a story. They sit in an ambiguous space between stasis and change.

Koji Nakamura
Can I Make 100 Friends?

Koji grew up in Shimosuwa, in Nagano, and studied Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts.
His father made the first puppet and gave it to him at birth. A fire later took the studio, and most of what had been around that childhood. Koji had taken that first puppet with him to university. From this first friend, he began to make more.
In Suwa the great wooden pillars have long been treated as more than wood — objects that hold a presence. The puppets come from that same pull.
Some are stitched from fabric offcuts that might have become a shirt or a dress. Each one is cut and stitched by hand. Koji gives it a number. Whoever takes it home gives it a name. The friend goes with them.

Alberto Alejandro Rodríguez
Auriga, 2021
Pladur, wood and wallpaper retrieved from a ruined building in Havana
32 × 32 × 6.5 cm each

Fragments of plasterboard, wood, and wallpaper recovered from a once-distinguished 20th-century building in Havana — now a ruin — become abstract, wall-based sculptures. Glimpsed as if through a portal, they keep traces of a space shaped by time, neglect, and human presence. Detached from their original architecture, the remnants hold both rootlessness and nostalgia.

For Rodríguez, destruction is not only loss. Exposed layers of a ruin can reveal hidden structures, histories, and possibilities. They ask what counts as cultural heritage and how neglected spaces might still be remembered. Auriga sits in that tension between decay and transformation: fragments as vessels for memory, absence, and renewed meaning.

Selin Nisa Açıkel
Veil, 2025 · Searching, 2025
Charcoal on paper, 30 × 30 cm

What remains when memory arrives in fragments?

For Açıkel, drawing is a way of tracing that remainder. Both sides of her family are Circassian-Turkish — descendants of a community displaced from the Northwest Caucasus in the 19th century and resettled across the Ottoman Empire. There was no fixed centre and no continuous story. What survived did so through practice: music, food, ritual, and codes of conduct.
The Veil series looks at that gradual thinning of transmission. Faces appear in pieces, recalled rather than observed, held between presence and disappearance. With charcoal, she treats portraiture as a kind of time record — a way of holding traces that last after clear recollection fades.

Shown in On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name, the works sit with the exhibition’s questions about displaced histories, blended identities, and the quiet residues through which cultures endure.

The Last Emperor, 2025
Oil on Belgian linen, 150 × 120 cm
A ceremonial figure in a yellow-gold imperial costume and red hat — and white sneakers — stands against a vivid green field scattered with gold stars, on a black-and-white checkered base.
Heritage meets power and a little theater. Wang playfully reimagines official portraiture, suggesting that heritage is not fixed, but performed, questioned, and reinvented.

Miracle Taro just turned 10.

As his cat gets older, Shuto Mizukami wanted to make something about him. He prefers small things, so he painted a tiny portrait of Taro (named by his mother) and gave it a house.

Cat House Chain takes its title from Umberto Boccioni’s Futurist work Head + House + Light.

First look — more to come.

Meet Mouse.

Another face from Morgan Ogilvie’s Obstinate Toy Soldiers.

With its cooler palette and flashes of candy-bright color, Mouse carries the same quiet unease beneath its playful surface. Painted alla prima, the figure seems to hover somewhere between costume, character, and memory.

Mouse (2026) joins Space Cowboy II in Basel this month as part of On a Bit of Earth Which Had No Name, opening 28 August at 532 Gallery.
