We’re excited to welcome Lydia as Director of 5-50. An artist, curator, writer, and founder and Executive Director of BolsterArts @bolsterarts, Lydia brings experience across exhibition-making, public programming, artist development, and building sustained relationships around artists and their practices.

Her first weekend as Director of 5-50 begins with the opening of Adam Sorensen’s @birchroot Thieves this Saturday, October 17, from 5–8 pm.

The weekend continues Sunday at Peep Space @peepspace, where Lydia’s longstanding interest in artist-centered public programming comes together with an ongoing relationship with outgoing 5-50 Director Bailey Coleman (who we congratulate on her new position @trotterandsholer). Lydia will moderate a conversation around Natale Adgnot’s @natale_adgnot solo exhibition Reined In with Coleman, Amy Rosenblum-Martin @amyrosenblummartin, and Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy @angelik.wiki

Opening this Saturday, October 17, 5 to 8 PM! Join us at 5-50 Gallery for the opening reception of Thieves, a solo exhibition by Adam Sorensen.

Drawing on the traditions of Romantic landscape painting and the sublime, Sorensen creates otherworldly environments where cascading waterfalls, monumental rock formations, and luminous skies blur the boundaries between the real and imagined. His paintings contemplate the beauty, fragility, and impermanence of the natural world.

5-50 Gallery is pleased to present Thieves, solo exhibition by Adam Sorensen. Featuring recent paintings which contemplate the sublime landscape. Drawing upon the visual languages of the Hudson River School, nineteenth-century European Romanticism, Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts, and the painters of the American West, Sorensen examines the relationship between the divinity of the natural world and the growing impermanence of both the natural and human world.

Adam Sorensen (b. 1976) is based in Portland, Oregon, and has exhibited nationally for more than two decades. Emily Manwaring’s portraits extend beyond the painted surface.

A Queens-born, Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist, Manwaring’s practice is deeply informed by Haitian and Trinidadian cultural histories, exploring identity, materiality, and collective memory.

In this series, oil-painted portraits on palm bark reference the imagery of 1990s and early 2000s hair advertisements. The natural fibers of the bark extend the figures’ hair beyond the painted image, mirroring the sculptural qualities, textures, and cascading forms of Black hair.

Here, the material becomes a physical and symbolic extension of the body. By allowing the palm bark to complete each portrait, Manwaring collapses the boundary between painting and sculpture, creating figures that appear to emerge from the surface and occupy physical space.

5-50 is open today until 6. Wednesday - Sunday 11:30am-6pm, on view through Sunday, October 11.

5-50 Gallery is pleased to present fèy palmis, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of Eilen Itzel do Espírito Santo (@eilen.itzel) 🇩🇴 and Emily Manwaring (@em.ill.e) 🇭🇹🇹🇹. The exhibition’s title emerges from a spiritual and material affinity shared between the two artists: the figure of Ayizan, a revered Vodou lwa and Yoruba Orisha associated with sacred knowledge, initiation, ancestral wisdom, and feminine spiritual authority. Traditionally honored through offerings of woven palm leaves, Ayizan is also symbolized by the palm frond itself. For both Eilen and Emily, the palm leaf functions as both a material language and a conceptual framework, offering a means to explore narratives of community, ancestry, and reclamation.
