A Peruvian fisherman identified as Jonathan Quispe performed an act of bravery by entering the sea to rescue a whale that had become trapped in a fishing net.

Jonathan Quispe entered the water without an oxygen tank and, armed only with a knife and a mask, managed to approach the cetacean to cut part of the rigging that prevented its movement.

Quispe recounted that he decided to act after hearing the sounds the whale was making and noticing its difficulty moving. The task wasn’t simple, as the animal initially submerged every time he tried to approach.

After several attempts, the fisherman managed to climb onto his back and cut the net to free him.

The man said that this is not the first time he has carried out a rescue of this type, as he has previously helped to free dolphins and turtles trapped in nets.

From Costa Rica to the world. 🌊

Plastic pulled off a Costa Rican beach, standing in four European cities for the past 3 years.

Fossils of the Anthropocene isn't a sculpture of something ancient — it's a fossil of right now. Bottle caps, fishing line, sand and stone, fused into the rock our era will leave behind. Every fragment collected during 5 Minute Beach Cleanups.

📍 Zürich, Switzerland — where the journey began
📍 Geneva, Switzerland
📍 Frankfurt, Germany
📍 Nice, France — during the UN Ocean Conference and on view now at @museemassena

More than 200,000 people in Europe have stood in front of these fossils and been asked what the work asks all of us: how will we be remembered?

That answer is still being written.

The exhibitions were real. The billboards are not -not yet. Consider this a proposal.

This is why you should not leave rubbish at the beach… 😔

🚮Plastic cups, bottles, fishing lines and many other small items that are left on the beach can become fatal traps for hatchlings!

Fortunately these two hatchlings were saved by our volunteers that patrol the nesting beaches daily ❤️‍🩹

Garbage + health crisis years in the making…

Workers try to clear a sea of garbage caused by intense monsoon rains in Manila, Philippines.

Floods, landslides and accidents driven by a nine-day downpour equivalent to more than a month’s worth of rain in some areas have killed at least 16 people in the region, rescuers said.

Los esperamos en el MADC 🌊

El 30 de julio, a las 6:00 p.m., se inaugura “Cuidados Extensivos: Bienestar a través del diseño” en el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo -una exposición colectiva que reúne a algunas de las voces más talentosas del diseño costarricense en torno a una pregunta esencial: ¿qué es el bienestar y cómo podemos vivirlo?

Como parte de esta muestra, tendremos el honor de presentar la obra de arte “Fósiles del Antropoceno”: plastiglomerados recolectados en la costa del Pacífico de Costa Rica, creada por la Fundación 5 Minute Beach Cleanup y Design Lab by Esteban Salazar. Una obra que invita a mirar de frente el impacto de nuestro consumo - y a imaginar, también, un camino distinto.

Ahí estaremos, junto al equipo de la fundación y al diseñador de la obra, para compartir esta noche con todo el país. 🇨🇷

La exposición estará abierta al público del 30 de julio al 13 de febrero, así que no hay excusa para no venir a conocer los fósiles con calma.

Gracias infinitas al Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo y la Dirección de Patrimonio Cultural del Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud por esta invitación tan especial, y a Design Lab by Esteban Salazar y Esencial Costa Rica@por caminar junto a esta obra desde siempre.

Sea turtles have been swimming on this planet for 100 million years. They navigate by the earth’s magnetic field. They return to the exact beach where they were born to lay their own eggs. They have outlasted dinosaurs.Right now, they are endangered, not because of something dramatic, but because of plastic. The ordinary debris of human life, washing into their world. Tortuga Libre teaches children in Costa Rica to know this, and to care. 1500 students have already learned.
$5 a month,one time or every month, keeps that going. Educate one child. Link in bio. Happy World Sea Turtle Day. May they keep swimming. 🐢
