:: janice mcclain
:: s/t mca 1986

:: disco never died, it just got more electrified, digitized, and thats one reason i love the eighties. janice did have a warner bros hit single in 79 at 15 with “smack dab in the middle” that had the bell bottom dance flash. and her latest club single in 2014 was up to date 12 yrs ago. but this is her only released album. its overall r&b & reminiscent of patty labelle who helped to get her start
:: theres like 20 producers for these 9 tracks and yet it does have a sense of coalescence. one focus track here is album opener “passion and pain”, where that sweet sweet digital percussion is in full form. its written by bassist douglas grigsby & drummer daryl burgee and tastefully produced by nick martinelli, who tightened up & brought much of the street beats into the future with the lynndrum
:: “when love calls” is written like a hit with fairly catchy verse chorus combos enough to be at least a near ear worm and thumpy yet smooth rhythms
:: janice has a 3 octave range and she lets loose on the powerful, soulful “second chance on love”. with a slow gospel feel backed by what sounds like female choir. she really lets go in thanking god for her new man
:: “hideaway” has great build with electric guitar by Idunno Who threaded throughout. the “rhythm of our love” also has a guitar solo instead of ruining it with the common seasoning of the day. remember the silly sax on the lost boys soundtrack?
:: on it’s gonna come back to you, janice displays the sassy emphasized by some great digital percussive synth programming by keyboardist nick johnson
:: who else appreciates the hard work ladies of the eighties (often unnecessarily) put into looking so good? my recommendation to listen may not entice you, but i know you cant deny that look in janice’s eyes. she sure captured me ~ spark by @5park5

:: the eleventh house feat. larry coryell
:: aspects
:: atlantic 1976

:: this sun day warmed the back 40 enough to mow it before it rains all week. a short moment on the listening room couch was deserved. after the cobham album i figured id break out one ive had a few months yet had yet to drop the needle on
:: their 3rd & last studio album till 40 years later. it leans more into the fusion than the hippy sounds that i think of when it comes to coryell & an acoustic guitar. that element does close out side one with mtume on galloping percussion. however i was taken back to my younger days drawing houses & horses while listening to the tracks “pyramids” & “yin yang” on a jazz show broadcasting from kocc near edmond ok
:: this is definitely an electric guitar fusion album and he got some of the biggys from that scene to join in. including terumasa hino on trumpet, john lee keeps the thumpin low end funky, steve khan adds his acoustic licks while dave sanborn and brothers mike & randy brecker fill out the brass section, which at times brings to mind earth wind & fire
:: it’s possible youve also heard “woman of truth and future” where coryell’s electric, hino’s flugelhorn & mike mandel’s synth keys blend to make an uplifting earworm. “ah, i remember this one too”
:: as a huge electric guitar fan, its kool to hear coryell let everyone shine while still bringing in some rather rad solos. everyone really blends well and, in all “aspects”, are amazingly locked-in with the fast paced rhythms of the closing title track. what a musical ride! ~ spark by @5park5

:: billy cobham
:: inner conflicts
:: atlantic records 1978

:: pretty big fan of this prolific drummer. mostly because of his fusion work. so when i saw gotwhatulike records in south kcmo had this i just had to stop by & grab it on my way home. if the store hadnt been about to close in minutes i probably woulda done a quick discogs check & gone that route since this copy had serious cover damage & this is definitely one i want a good copy of. the guy said hed just had a seizure & was ready to go home so i didnt wait for the better deal
:: well $6 was relatively cheap and it was in my hands. later at home i found a minute to read & listen, it was a splendid listening experience. yeah, theres a bit of noise between tracks (makin me want a more minty copy - or proper record cleaner), but otherwise i have to say this is one of the best recordings i have. you can tell these tracks were all composed just by cobham but they are actually great
:: cobham being a drummer of course is going to be writing songs heavily emphasizing percussion, yet here anyway this makes for a very fun album. its 1978 and to my experience the hight of synth programming in jazz. cobham also handles this quite adeptly. im an 80s kid, gimme those synths! yes this music sounds super sweet
:: cobham has collabed with many a musician. hes worked with george duke & miles davis and co-founded the mahavishnu orchestra with john mcglaughlin in 71. here he has many guests including bassist alphonso johnson bringin the funk, and jazz guitarists john scofield & steve kahn layin down some rockin licks
:: the rad album cover detail describes the music pretty well as these 5 tracks are fairly technical, and yet i also like my jazz-fusion funky. cobham delivers it all here. id rather call it inner complexity ~ spark by @5park5

:: julianna hatfield
:: lightening May Strike
:: laundromat records 2025

:: her beautiful layered vocals juxtaposed by guitar distortion gets me every time

:: was kinda saddened to see another “clever” album cover. It can be more like a wasted opportunity with a blank canvas. but hey she was nice enough to scribble on it a bit to make it more interesting
:: a move to new house and other tragedies urged the songs “long slow nervous breakdown“ and “my house is not my dream home”
:: she said her moms brother was struck to death by lightning when he was 16 and so believed everything was faited, yet julianna said shed rather ultimately turn her thoughts to positive
:: so you can either see this cover as lightening or image of popsicle drips as thats a hard hitting hit track here by @5park5

:: scandroid/ celldweller
:: the force theme/ imperial march 7”
:: fixt records

:: i first heard klayton on the 1992 r.e.x. records demo where he & his brothers thrash band immortal had a track along with my local buds bands abhor evil & hot pink turtle
:: the prolific klayton (scott david albert) went on to form the guitar oriented industrial band circle of dust, then brianchild, argyle park & angel dust with illusionist criss angel and has a vast array of mixes remixes & also music on film, most of which you can find on his record label FiXT
:: as showcased on this 7” picture disc, klayton’s project celldweller is more electronic industrial while his scandroid leans into my era, with 80s synth sounds by @5park5

:: arooj aftab
:: night reign
:: verve records 2024

:: an occasional blind buy can result in unexpected enjoyment. when you can catch a rare night to relax with the turntable it can be especially satisfying. and this, as suspected is a pleasant listen indeed
:: i like her website’s description of the album: “‘the night is my biggest source of inspiration.’ by trial or intuition she’s come to understand that these still moments of cover uniquely enable healing, desire, shelter, love—each essential elements of life and living, of intimate relation to one another.”
:: arooj, who just turned 41 4 days ago, is a pakistani who has resided in new york the last half of her life allowing her a wide array of musical collaborations. and there are some good ones here
:: i usually love much of the asian sound. on this album aftab’s music and smokey urdu and english singing is actually merely flavored with that eastern vibrato. while this is a fairly mellow jazzy folk listen there are various Instruments of percussion, which along with the string plucking, give it an uplifting lively feel. fortunately elvis costello’s quirky wurlitzer solo is short, however harpist maeve gilchrist and bassist petros klampanis are standouts
:: this persian purple pvc plays rather pleasantly yet if you must use a different medium try out the haunting track “bolo na” featuring moor mother on vox & joel ross on vibes, or the driving and mysterious finale “last night reprise”… but only when you have a few quiet moments in the dark ~ spark by @5park5

:: nakamichi mb-3 musicbank

:: a guy north of kansas city posted this early 2026. he bought the 1993 player new in colorado. he told me all his cds reminded him of his wife who had passed so he boxed it up 5 years ago. i told him it can help to make new memories with the music you loved so you can listen to them anew. of course results may vary. hes now only streaming and his hegel? amp and big room filling von schweikert speakers do play bluetooth files fairly nicely
:: some of the nak decks have a horizontal control layout but ive always like this stacked soft-touch setup
:: the main feature here is the “music bank system”. rather than the typical clunky carousel, this tray-loads & stores 6 discs + a 7th for play. this is the same mechanism used in macintosh players. my sony changer would skip and the yamaha is fine once you get the drawer opened to add a disc
:: this deck uses dual burr-brown dacs for clear channel separation, lower noise floor & harmonic distortion and thats the real important feature right? quality parts make a difference you can hear and this player does sound quite amazing
:: as of early 2026 the cd room has this player playing thru a yamaha rx-v2095 receiver to klipsch kg 1.5 stand-mounts. just need to find a matching cassette deck… eventually hopefully the dragon! by @5park5
