Out with the old

Is it just me, or do other people also have a problem with taking apart old projects when they no longer fit the space or you’ve upgraded to something better?

In the back is the base to a desk I had built for my partner in our first place.

In the front is the coffee table I built using the golden rule to fit our couch and old place. It still fits the couch but not our current place.

What do y’all do with old projects?

It ain’t heavy

It’s my dolly.

I finally decided to rebuild my moving dolly rather than patching the pallet wood yet again.

It helped that a friend was tasked with disposing of a massive (4’x12’x1.5”) conference table at his school and had asked me to help cut it down to more manageable pieces.

I kept a large piece that I had cut down to fit into my car, not knowing what I’d use it for. And wouldn’t you know it, it fit my dolly’s dimensions perfectly. Which meant I didn’t have to cut up the carpet that I had covered it with before.

I also upgraded the wheels with ones that I had salvaged from old computer carts that had reached their end of life. 4 wheel steering may seem like a good feature, but not when you constantly have to fight it on any sloped surface. Just sayin’.

The table top is made of very dense particle board. VERY dense. So, while particle board may not be the strongest material horizontally, I don’t think I will have any problem with it collapsing like the pallet wood had.

Also check out the weight difference!

The wall

is all stacked, glued and backfilled.

And as I said in my stories:

No, you can’t afford me!
(Mainly because I’m not sure that my various therapists want to see me that frequently

Believe it!

Level. Plumb. Lined up!

On to filling the blocks and then setting the next row.

Here goes nothing!

Just out here

making use of an old project from my apprenticeship. (The clamps, not the grinder.)

AFTER finding out why I had used a piece of wood to hold the screws I was grinding down to the length I needed.

Yup, that’s right. I knew I would burn my fingers if I held on to the screws directly. But then I needed to apply pressure to the screws and what better place to do that than pressing on the screw that is sitting securely in a piece of wood.

Now I’m trying to decide if I should pop the blister right away or just let it heal as is

Another learning opportunity

And I almost missed it.

I almost clamped the two panels together the same way I did for the other closet. With the front, edge banded edge facing out. Which caused the edge banding on one of the panels to tear out. Requiring me having to replace it.

But I caught myself and managed to not wreck any edge banding. And the dado may be a bit wide, but it’s better than the last time.

I also realized that it may be better to mark out the holes and mount the drywall plugs between paint coats, rather than wasting a full day, waiting for the second coat to dry.

This time I painted the first coat the night before, then worked on the various pieces (dado, mounting holes, etc) during the day and didn’t paint the second coat until I had all the mounting points worked out and prepped.

This way, I was able get almost everything ready for me to mount everything tomorrow. (Or whenever I have the next time slot available to work on this closet.)

Wish me luck.

The things you can do

with old hard drives.

Some make clocks out of them.
Others use the magnets from them as stud finders when their electronic one fails them again.

Until they need to figure out a way to have both their drill and the screws close at hand while holding up the panel with the other. (The holes in the panel were too big to hold the screws in place.)

It worked surprisingly well. And because it’s not permanently mounted, I can still use it to find the nails in the studs.

I might be getting better at this whole “simple is best” thing. Maybe there’s hope for me yet.

Sidequesting again

Don’t ask me why I keep sidequesting, but apparently the urge to build this mini clamp rack just for the track saw rail clamps was very strong.

And for some reason it needed some angles.

Yes, I found a way to make these cuts safely on the mitre saw. No, I don’t have proof. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

I did wonder though how I managed to build a bunch of these smaller thing before I had a brad nailer. Or why I didn’t use the compressor version more often. Or at all.

Now I don’t have to move these clamps to get a the other clamps behind them any more.

Finally.

Believe it

Or not.

But the first side is actually complete. And I have already started working on the other side.

Miracles do happen.

So, children

what did we learn today?

That when you have a good idea, you may want to think it through before implementing it. There may be some pitfalls you have not thought of yet.

Or, you could just go full steam ahead, clamp the two sides of your closet build together and use the tracksaw to cut relief cuts on both sides before going at it with the router to reduce chip out.

Not a bad thought. Until the router rips a chunk out of the edge banding on the exit side and forces you to redo said edge banding from scratch.

So, what is the lesson then?

Clamp the two pieces together like you did, but this time, butt them up on the front edge. That way the edge banding will always be supported and you should have less blow out.

Or not.

Your call. You do you.

I want to paint it

not black. Or white.

I’m getting closer to installing the first shelves. But first I have to get rid of the dark green. I didn’t want to go with white either though because even I think that would be too much white.

I had planned to paint two coats today and make the last cuts (including dados) on and in the closet pieces. Alas, all I got done was one coat of paint and no cuts.

Tomorrow is another day.

Happy little accidents!

I designed the cabinet to fit between the studs. And the drawers to fit inside the cabinet.

What I didn’t pay attention to were the inside dimensions of the drawers.

And wouldn’t you know it, they are big enough to fit my t-shirts perfectly. And even my custom made tonfa fit into them.

I don’t think it would’ve worked out as well, if that was what I was going for.

Now go look at some clouds and happy little trees.
