Baseline is my Senior Thesis / Capstone. It is a project rooted in research, social activism, urban design, art, and branding all operating using the engine of the graphic design practice. It employs design as a tool for civic engagement, using visual communication to interrogate, challenge, and reshape a social environment for the reclamation of important public spaces-Outdoor Basketball Courts.

The primary narrative of Baseline is the removal of outdoor basketball courts in Chicago’s 19th Ward. Beginning in the late 20th century, courts were systematically dismantled under the guise of “public safety” concerns, a decision deeply intertwined with racialized fears of Black youth. Baseline seeks to uncover and visualize this history and in turn advocate for the restoration of equitable courts for everyone.
