Marvin Gaye- I heard It Through The Grapevine -1968📍

It seems like everyone in Motown heard about this song "through the grapevine" before it was finally recorded. The classic about a man who finds out his woman is cheating on him was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Strong came up with the idea and asked Motown writers Holland-Dozier-Holland to work on it with him. They refused to credit another writer, so Strong took it to Whitfield, who helped put it together. The song eventually became a Motown classic, but it had a rough start, as executives at the company thought it was too bluesy and lacked hit potential.

Smokey Robinson and the Miracles were the first to record the song, but their version wasn't released until years later on an album called Special Occasion. The Isley Brothers then took a crack at it, but their version wasn't released. Whitfield and Strong then had Marvin Gaye record the song but still no luck: Motown head Berry Gordy chose Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Your Unchanging Love" over "Grapevine" as his next single. Finally, a new Motown act Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded the song as a gospel rocker. Their version was a hit, entering the Top 40 in November 1967 and going to #2 in America.

Marvin Gaye's version was included on his 1968 album In The Groove (later re-titled I Heard It Through The Grapevine). After E. Rodney Jones, the Chicago disc jockey at WVON, started playing it on the air, Berry Gordy reconsidered and released Gaye's version as a single, which became even more popular and known as the definitive version of the song. Gaye's "Grapevine" pounded the charts about a year after Knight's, going to #1 in America on December 14, 1968. by @60s.core

Cream- Sunshine Of Your Love- 1967📍

This psychedelic rock classic has a lyric written by Pete Brown, a beat poet who was friends with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce of Cream. He also wrote lyrics for the band's songs "I Feel Free" and "White Room." Eric Clapton - the guitarist and most famous member of Cream - wrote the music along with Jack Bruce.

Pete Brown wrote the opening line after being up all night working with Bruce and watching the sun come up. In a Songfacts interview, he told the tale: "We had been working all night and had gotten some stuff done. We had very little time to write for Cream, but we happened to have some spare time and Jack came up with the riff. He was playing a stand-up - he still had his stand-up bass, because he'd been a jazz musician. He was playing stand-up bass, and he said, 'What about this then?' and played the famous riff. I looked out the window and wrote down, 'It's getting near dawn.' That's how it happened. It's actually all true, really, all real stuff."
Jack Bruce's bass line carries the song. He got the idea for it after going to a Jimi Hendrix concert. When Kees van Wee interviewed Bruce in 2003 for the Dutch magazine Heaven, Kees asked him which of his many songs epitomizes Jack Bruce the most. At first he was in doubt whether he should answer "Pieces Of Mind" or "Keep On Wondering," but then he changed his mind and opted for "Sunshine Of Your Love." Because, said Bruce, "It's based on a bass riff. And when you enter a music shop this is the song that kids always play to try out a guitar." by @60s.core

Magic Sam- Looking Good- 1969📍

December 1, 1969),[1] known as Magic Sam, was an American Chicago blues musician. He was born in Grenada County, Mississippi, and learned to play the blues from listening to records by Muddy Waters and Little Walter.[2] After moving to Chicago at the age of 19, he was signed by Cobra Records and became well known as a bluesman after the release of his first record, "All Your Love", in 1957. He was known for his distinctive tremolo guitar playing.[3]The stage name Magic Sam was devised by Sam's bass player and childhood friend Mack Thompson at Sam's first recording session for Cobra, as an approximation of "Maghett Sam". The name Sam was using at the time, Good Rocking Sam, was already being used by another artist by @60s.core

Bob Dylan- Desolation Row- 1965📍

The opening lines of this song ("They're selling postcards of the hanging, they're painting the passports brown...") refer to three men who were in town with the circus and were accused of raping a girl in Duluth, Minnesota. On June 15, 1920, a mob broke them out of jail and lynched them. Postcards with pictures of the hanging were sold as souvenirs. Dylan's father, Abraham Zimmerman, was 8 years old and living in Duluth at the time of the hangings.
This is the last track on the album. It is eleven minutes long, and was Dylan's longest song up to that point. Dylan rarely plays it at concerts, but when he does, it can stretch out to 45 minutes.
When trying to interpret this song, keep in mind that Dylan was experimenting with LSD around the time he recorded it.
This was never released as a single, probably due to its length, but the Highway 61 Revisited album went to #3 US and #4 UK.
Dylan performed this for the first time at the Forest Hills Music Festival in Queens, New York on August 28, 1965, after he electrified the Newport Folk Festival. It was part of the acoustic set Dylan played before bringing on his electric band.
Live versions are included on Dylan's MTV Unplugged, and Live 1966. by @60s.core

Karen Dalton - It Hurts Me Too- 1969📍

A cult singer, 12-string guitarist, and banjo player of the New York 1960s folk revival, Karen Dalton still remains known to very few, despite counting the likes of Bob Dylan and Fred Neil among her acquaintances. This was partly because she seldom recorded, only making one album in the 1960s — and that didn’t come out until 1969, although she had been known on the Greenwich Village circuit since the beginning of the decade. It was also partly because, unlike other folksingers of the era, she was an interpreter who did not record original material. And it was also because her voice — often compared to Billie Holiday, but with a rural twang — was too strange and inaccessible to pop audiences. Nik Venet, producer of her debut album, went as far as to remark, “She was very much like Billie Holiday. Let me say this, she wasn’t Billie Holiday but she had that phrasing Holiday had and she was a remarkable one-of-a-kind type of thing.... Unfortunately, it’s an acquired taste, you really have to look for the music.”
Dalton was not comfortable in the studio, and her Capitol album It’s So Hard to Tell Who’s Going to Love You the Best came about when Nik Venet, who had tried unsuccessfully to record her several times, invited her to a Fred Neil session. He asked her to cut a Neil composition, “Little Bit of Rain,” as a personal favor so he could have it in his private collection; that led to an entire album, recorded in one session, most of the tracks done in one take. Dalton recorded one more album in the early ‘70s, produced by Harvey Brooks (who had played on some ‘60s Dylan sessions). Done in Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, it, like her debut, had an eclectic assortment of traditional folk tunes, blues, covers of soul hits (“When a Man Loves a Woman,” “How Sweet It Is”), and contemporary numbers by singer/songwriters (Dino Valente, the Band’s Richard Manuel). The Band’s “Katie’s Been Gone,” included on The Basement Tapes, is rumored to be about Dalton. by @60s.core

Jimi Hendrix - Foxy Lady- 1969📍

This is a very sexual song that was probably inspired by Lithofayne "Faye" Pridgon, Hendrix's girlfriend in the mid-1960s. According to The Los Angeles Times the song's title references a kitten he gave Pridgon, and later a poodle, both named "Foxy."

Other suggested inspirations for the song are:

Heather Taylor, who eventually married Roger Daltrey, the lead singer for The Who.

Kathy Etchingham, another of Hendrix's girlfriends at the time.
Hendrix opened for The Monkees on their 1967 tour. When he played this, the young girls who came for The Monkees and had no interest in Hendrix shouted "Davy!" when Hendrix sang "Lady," resulting in "Foxy Davy," and turning it into a tribute to their idol, Monkees lead singer Davy Jones.
This was featured in the movie Wayne's World. It is used in a scene where Garth (Dana Carvey), sings it while thinking about his dream woman, played by Donna Dixon.
In the booklet for the Experience Hendrix CD, Hendrix was quoted as saying this was the only happy song he had ever written. He said that he usually just doesn't feel happy when writing songs. >>
The title of this song has two alternate spellings: "Foxey Lady" (for release in America) and "Foxy Lady" (for release in the UK). >>
Hendrix recorded this on December 13, 1966. That same day, he made his first TV appearance on the British show Ready Steady Go. His group The Jimi Hendrix Experience had been together only 2 months at that point, but things moved very quickly. Three days later, their first single, "Hey Joe" was released. >> by @60s.core

Johnny Cash- Folsom Prison Blues- 1968📍
In the early 1950s, Johnny Cash finished school and joined the United States Air Force just in time for the Korean War. While stationed in West Germany, Cash used his military pay to purchase his first guitar. It was also while in Germany that Cash watched the 1951 drama Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison. This sparked a transformation in Cash, who began to embody the spirit of the romantic outlaw. It was also this film that inspired what would become Cash's signature song "Folsom Prison Blues."

Once returned to American soil, Cash's musical career began to take off and his personal life took a downward spiral as he nursed an addiction to alcohol, amphetamines and barbiturates. This reinforced his bad boy image, solidified by his 1957 debut album release, Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar. The album included two of what would become Cash's most beloved tracks: "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues." "I Walk the Line" snagged the #1 spot on the Country chart, while "Folsom Prison Blues" peaked at #3. But it was "Folsom Prison Blues" that defined Cash, both in terms of his art and character.

"I sat with my pen in my hand, trying to think up the worst reason a person could have for killing another person, and that's what came to mind," Johnny Cash told Rolling Stone magazine when discussing his lyrics, "But I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die." Although the melody for "Folsom Prison Blues" is largely borrowed from Gordon Jenkins' "Crescent City Blues" – a controversy which eventually ended in Cash paying Jenkins a $75,000 settlement – the song assured Cash fame and a dedicated fan following. The song employs two folk traditions, that of the train song and prison song – musical styles, which Cash embraced throughout his career. Thematically, "Folsom Prison Blues" is indicative of Cash's compassion and empathy for prisoners. Although Cash was arrested for various misdemeanors, he never actually served a prison sentence. This fact did not deter him from becoming a champion for the incarcerated. by @60s.core

The Beatles- She Loves You- 1963📍

The Beatles tell quite a tale in this tidy pop song. Some poor guy thinks he has lost his girl for good, but he's redeemed when he finds out from a friend that she still loves him. There's even a moral at the end of the story: "Pride can hurt you too." Good advice when arguing with a loved one.
This was an instant hit in the UK, but not in America, where it was released on Swan records, the only US label that would take it. Swan put it out in September 1963, but while The Beatles were huge in their homeland, they were still no big deal in America until February 1964. That's when Beatlemania took hold and "She Loves You" became a US hit.
This popularized the phrase "yeah, yeah, yeah." Paul McCartney's dad wanted them to sing "yes, yes, yes" instead because he thought it sounded more dignified.
Yeah, the Everly Brothers did it first, using a hook of "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" on their 1961 cover of the song "Temptation," which was a #1 hit in the UK.
This is one of four Beatles songs that was never released in stereo. The others are "Love Me Do," "I'll Get You" and "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)."
The Beatles released a German version translated as "Sie Liebt Dich" in the US in 1964. They learned some German when they became the house band at the Star-Club in Hamburg in 1962, but needed a German speaker to help them with the lyrics. They recorded the German version in Paris - it was the only time they recorded outside of England.

Apart from "My Bonnie," which was recorded with Tony Sheridan in their early days in Hamburg, the only other song the Beatles recorded in another language, again German, was "I Want To Hold Your Hand." "Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand" was recorded the same time as "Sie Liebt Dich."

"Sie Liebt Dich" peaked at #97, the lowest position of the Beatles' 71 Hot 100 charted songs.
In the UK, this is the biggest-selling Beatles single. It held the record for top-selling UK single of all time until 1977, when Wings (led by McCartney) topped it with "Mull Of Kintyre." by @60s.core

Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang- 1966📍

This was written by Cher's husband at the time, Sonny Bono.
In this song, Cher recalls playing childhood games with a boy when he would shoot her with his toy gun. They grow up together and get married but then he leaves her. She has again been shot down, but this time it's for real and she is devastated.
Cher re-recorded the song in 1987 on her self-titled album with Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora on guitar.
This was an international hit and Cher's biggest solo hit of the 1960s in the United States, selling over 3 million copies.
A cover by Nancy Sinatra released as an album track the same year was used in the opening scenes of the 2003 Tarantino film Kill Bill Volume 1. Tarantino had wanted to use "Bang Bang" for a while and he finally found a way to do it. "Why my version, I'm not sure," Sinatra recalled to Uncut magazine. "I guess it was the guitar, the lonely sound of Billy Strange's guitar. It caused a resurgence for me. People were stunned when they saw my name on the screen, they didn't know it was my recording. But Quentin really gave me a new start."

In 2005, the UK production duo Audio Bullys used Nancy Sinatra's rendition as a basis for a dance track, which reached #9 in the UK. by @60s.core
