A Camera Is A Gun

Dieses Projekt reflektiert die Macht der Kamera. Inspiriert von Susan Sontags „On Photography“ – Fotografieren als Akt der Aneignung, mit etwas Räuberischem – wird die Kamera hier als Werkzeug der Dominanz verstanden.
Diese Dominanz wird durch Satire und Vertrauen ausgeübt. Die Porträtierten – Freund*innen aus meinem Umfeld – werden zu Figuren einer konstruierten Welt, in der der Ernst der Fotografie unterlaufen und ihre Künstlichkeit sichtbar wird. Durch Humor und Komplizenschaft wird das Fotografieren zum bewussten Machtspiel.
Das Projekt verspottet die Feierlichkeit des Bildes und plädiert für das Machen um des Machens willen. Die Kamera dient zugleich als Vorwand, öffentliche Räume anzueignen oder einschüchternde, traumhafte Orte zu betreten – und legt offen, wer wo sein darf.
So ist die Kamera eine Waffe, aber auch ein Werkzeug für Spiel, Zugang und Fiktion – Macht verschwindet nicht, sie wird verschoben, geteilt, parodiert.

Die Abschlussarbeit wurde von @sibyllefendt betreut.

Las imágenes de golden hour nacieron de una situación imprevista. La sesión estaba pensada
para realizarse con un caballo en un establo en medio de la nada, pero cuando ya estábamos
de camino (yo con la cara dorada y seis personas a mi cargo), la dueña del caballo canceló la
sesión en el último momento. Sin caballo y sin plan llamé a mi amiga Carla, una mujer de 84
años nacida en Berlín del este, con una casa muy peculiar y llena de objetos acumulados.
Las fotografías se hicieron a lo largo del camino en los distintos lugares y medios de transporte
que nos llevaron finalmente a casa de Carla. by @666fail

Today we highlight the work of Elena Sohmen (@666fail), featured in “Notes on Looking” at Floor 0.

Elena Sohmen (1999) is a Spanish German interdisciplinary artist and curator whose practice moves across photography, performance, video, painting, ceramics, and inclusive dance. Her work explores questions of power, accessibility, and perception, weaving together personal and collective narratives.

Often using public space as a photographic studio, Sohmen transforms everyday environments into sites of artistic production, challenging traditional hierarchies and opening up new ways of engaging with art. Working closely with friends and collaborators, her process is intimate and collective, positioning the everyday as both subject and material.

Through strategies of appropriation, decontextualization, and the use of visual clichés, her images, while seemingly harmonious, carry subtle tensions that reveal underlying structures of power, gender, and ableism, inviting us to look again at what feels familiar.

“Notes on Looking” is a group exhibition that brings together photographic practices exploring different ways of observing and interpreting the contemporary world, where the act of looking itself is constantly questioned.
