Khoya khoya x contemporary dance
technique choreography

Contemporary dance as a form is practiced via multiple techniques -
As a practitioner I have merged together many forms that I have learned over the years into how my body likes to move. The baseline is always rooted in technique,
Here’s what I tell everyone I practice with …
Once the body learns HOW to move - what to move becomes accessible.

Here’s a new fav choreo to an old fav song 🤍

Taught as a part of @678.colab regular contemporary class at @theopendoor24

Today in our practice session - we unanimously agreed to jaago zara

And suddenly we became young teenagers during sleepovers choreographing to this most iconic Indian pop band

To say @vivaindiaofficial music was pivotal for sooo many girls in my generation would be an understatement.
So here’s a love dance we made to celebrate their music re-releasing on many platforms and also hopefully 🤞🏼 a tour ?????
Big love to you @anushkadisco @nehabhasin4u @mahuakamat @praticheemohapatra @singwithseema

Reclaiming begins slowly.
An act repeated in constant.
Slowly… and then… all at once.

How infinite we are inside these finite bodies.
Raanti came from a very rebellious response to being villainised for my inherent wildness as a young girl.
“Don’t scream too loud, cross your legs when you’re seated. You must not lose your temper.
That’s such an unruly child - she gets into fights.”
This then opened out to my obsessive observation on the curbing of expression often exalted upon women’s / girls bodies.
Looking at the the news coming in from Iran, lands close by to us and right here in our own home land..I cant help but feel the need for a collective movement of wildness non conforming and resistance.

RAANTI It is a non narrative, movement installation-
Our bodies become the location point for revolution and expression.
Glitching in unison , in reckless abandon.
Whispering sweet non sense and stalking audiences

I read recently in a study that women have higher rate of autoimmune disorders because they are told and they learn to suppress their anger and their bodies find this the only way to deal with it. This truly bothers me.
And it should bother you too.
So next time you’re in a middle seat sandwiched between two others who have spread their legs and hogged the arm rest - pls shove your elbow, pls push your knees out.

Reclaiming begins slowly and then… all at once!

This iteration of RAANTI was performed in 2024 at @goetheinstitut_pune EMPOWERMENT

This year we brin Raanti back - in this and different other forms :)

I created it in process with a phenomenal cast of movers -
@tanz_vi @ms.sayli @hennrai @memedhac @678.colab

Stay tuned and stay raanti

Community Contemporary Dance Classes
by 678 CoLab at The Open Door Studio

We’re delighted to announce a 20-class community module in Contemporary Dance, focused on contemporary dance techniques and training, co-taught by Sayli (first 10 sessions) and Maitreyee (second half of the module).

This class is for anyone who wants to explore the natural rhythms of their body- to move, dance, and build a relationship with contemporary technique in an accessible way.
No prior dance training is required.

At its heart, this module is about reigniting a culture of dancing together and moving alongside other bodies, sharing space, rhythm, and presence.

Something many of us lost during the pandemic, and something more and more people are now remembering the need for.

This is a gentle, curious, and supportive space to try that out.

🗓 Tuesdays & Thursdays
⏰ 6:30–8:00 PM
📍 The Open Door Studio
💰Fees & Registration
• ₹5,500 for the full 20-class module
• ₹3,000 for 10 classes : this is an installment option for the 20-class module (₹3,000 for the first 10 classes, followed by ₹3,000 for the next 10)
