I’m tired.

It’s been a long week.

It’s not lost on me that the posts that get the most attention are those that don’t feature pitties. It’s extremely disheartening that people continue to see them for their breed instead of as individual dogs with different personalities and qualities.

I wonder if these posts that I spend hours creating every night even matter.

I imagine is this what black dogs in shelters feel like. Trying so hard to be seen. Being the sweetest, best behaved boys and girls, yet being passed by simply because of the color of your coat.

I wonder if they sometimes feel like they’re running on empty…after giving all they have to give and still not feeling like it’s enough.

Today, I’m running on empty.

These worthy black dogs deserve more than a post I rushed through just to check a box. They deserve my whole heart, and tonight I simply don’t have enough left to give.

So I’ll be back, with a fuller tank, to give them the spotlight they deserve. 🖤

🐻Meet Hansel – 86 pounds of fluff, loyalty, and personality! 🐻

Hansel is an 8-year-old Malamute who’s been patiently waiting for someone to finally say, “You’re coming home with me.”

This handsome guy is calm, quiet, and loves nothing more than heading out for a nice walk. He’s a dream on a leash, knows his commands, and will happily turn heads everywhere he goes with his XL size and even bigger fluff. ❤️

One of Hansel’s funniest quirks? He loves to throw himself into bushes and rub all over the leaves and branches like it’s the best spa treatment ever. 🌿😂 It’s impossible not to smile watching him enjoy the little things.

Hansel is house-trained, trustworthy when left alone, and ready to be someone’s loyal companion. Like many dogs, he has a few special needs. He’s sensitive around his neck and collar, guards his food, may chase joggers, cyclists, or small critters on walks, and wears a muzzle for veterinary visits. Because of this, he’d thrive with an adopter who understands large northern breeds and is willing to appreciate him for exactly who he is.

Hansel has waited long enough. He deserves a family that will see beyond his quirks and love the incredible dog underneath all that fluff. Could that be you? ❤️🐾

I may get virtually outcasted bc of this post, but honestly…people need to know the truth and that’s not something I shy away from.

Our shelters are struggling. There’s a crisis behind closed doors. No, I’m not talking about shelters in NC/TX/FL/CA etc. right now. I’m talking about right here in our community. Shelters rely on public support to keep their doors open, and conversations around overcrowding and space euthanasia are difficult to have. Incredibly hard decisions have to be made on a daily basis.

It starts long before the pet gets to the shelter. Every decision a human makes in the life of that animal creates a ripple effect and determines their fate. Irresponsible breeding, supporting it, not spaying/neutering, getting a pet without proper knowledge or means, being too lazy to train or care for your pet…the list goes on.

All of this to say: it’s not sunshine and roses here in Hampton Roads. Our shelters need help - from you. Donate an item to the pet pantry. Share a post. Leave comments to boost visibility. Take a shelter dog out for an hour. Foster for a couple days. Send a post to friends/family/colleagues/your hair stylist. Good news - if you can scroll instagram, you can help. Let’s save some lives, 757! 🤜🤛🐾

Meet Budgie, an adoptable hound girl with the sweetest soul and the kind of face that makes you stop scrolling.

She’s the kind of dog who makes life quieter in the best way. The one who’s happy to join you for a walk, ride shotgun on every errand, or spend an entire afternoon snuggled up on the couch with her head in your lap.

At around 7 years old, Budgie has left the puppy chaos behind but still gets the cutest little zoomies when she’s excited. Then she’s right back to being the calm, gentle soul everyone falls in love with.

✨ Dog friendly.
✨ House & crate trained.
✨ Great in the car.
✨ Walks nicely on a leash.
✨ Loves belly rubs.
✨ No food or toy aggression.
✨ Calm for baths and nail trims.

And can we talk about that smile? 🥹 She wore down her front teeth before coming into rescue, leaving her with the sweetest little gummy grin. Her vet says she’s healthy, happy, and doesn’t need any dental work—it’s simply one more thing that makes her unforgettable.

Budgie will be available for adoption after her spay later this month, and we know her perfect family is out there.

Meet Joy! 🥹

Joy is a wonderfully laid-back 5-year-old lady, and her foster family has had nothing but great things to say about her! ❤️

✨ She immediately got along with their dogs, Tyson & Isla, and has done great with their kids.
🤫 She hasn’t barked or whined since arriving.
🏡 She’s doing amazing with house training—no accidents! She quietly sits by the door when she needs to go out.
🛏️ She slept through the night in her kennel and appears to be kennel trained.
🐍 She was curious about their daughter’s pet snake but quickly decided it wasn’t a big deal and walked away.
🦮 She pulls a little on leash but responds very well to correction and is eager to learn.
🧠 She’s extremely smart, wants to please, and is a quick learner.
🥕 Fun fact: Joy loves carrots!

They haven’t introduced her to cats yet while everyone settles in, so cat compatibility is still being evaluated.

Joy is a sweet, calm girl who seems ready to find her forever family! ❤️
