The first Latina Festival in the country brought more than 20 artists across two stages, gathering 500 attendees for a day centered on Latina music, art, culture, and community.

The lineup reflected the breadth of talent within Chicago’s Latina community. They brought an all-women mariachi group, pop stars, djs, an all-women punk band, and introduced the Latina community to pole dancers. It was a reminder that Latina artistry extends far beyond a single genre, sound, or aesthetic. There was something for every Latina from all walks of life

Held at Joe’s on Weed Street near Lincoln Park, a predominantly white neighborhood, the festival created a distinctly Latina-centered space in a part of the city where that representation is not always visible.

Behind the festival is founder Kendra, whose work has long focused on creating spaces for connection and expression. Through comedy, sapphic gatherings, music, dancing, and other community-centered events, she has built avenues for artists and audiences to find one another. Alongside her is a team of 5 people and 30 volunteers.

The festival also served as a culmination of Kendra’s work with DAMA Productions, with approximately 90% of the lineup having previously been featured through her events. Even the festival’s decorations reflected that history, incorporating elements from past events to create an immersive experience, and to remind attendees that this is only the tip of the iceberg.

The Latina Festival feels like an extension of that work: creating room for artists who are already here, building community around them, and making their presence impossible to overlook.

Chicago has no shortage of Latina talent. Sometimes, we just need someone to set the stage, roll out the red carpet, and give them the room to shine.

Spaces like this matter. They give artists visibility, give communities a place to gather, and make room for stories and experiences that deserve to be documented.

October 28 will mark one year since the release of Paradise Don’t Last Forever, a project that showcases Jay Wood’s growth as both an artist, lyricist and producer. Across the album, he moves effortlessly between smooth, laid-back records and grittier moments, creating a listening experience that feels dynamic without ever losing its sense of direction.

Beyond the music itself, Paradise Don’t Last Forever has been accompanied by a visual world that feels just as intentional. From the color grading and storytelling to the bold concepts brought to life alongside his team, each video expands the album’s universe and demonstrates the level of care that’s gone into the project from start to finish. Pole dancers on a farm with horses? A custom flag by Chicago’s own Chelsea B? The creativity knows no bounds.

That vision reached a new milestone on November 7, 2025, when Jay Wood performed the album live for the first time alongside M.E.H. and guest artists SONNY and theMIND. The crowd responded with nonstop energy, turning songs that had lived in headphones and car speakers into a shared experience. People danced, jumped, and sang along, giving the music a different kind of life than what’s captured on the recordings.

After the show, we talked with Jay Wood about the journey behind Paradise Don’t Last Forever, from the album’s early conception to seeing it performed in front of an audience for the first time. We also talked about the discipline he carried over from his football background, the challenges and rewards of developing his voice as an artist, and why growth in music is rarely a linear journey.

@_rusowsky at @thaliahallchicago was an unforgettable show. His music is trendsetting, pulling from so many influences to create a unique, experimental sound. On top of that, his stage presence was unreal, performing on an injured foot and still jumping around. A reminder of how much artists sacrifice for the love of art taken in Thalia Hall by @773lallamada
