FNJJ 5 (Gi Edition) was a great event. I just want to take some time to acknowledge some of the great performances from 80/20 yesterday. We’re known for being a primarily no-gi academy so it was important for us to really show and express our Jiu-Jitsu. So some quick shout outs. First @yvetteolvera, as a relatively new competitor she showed a beautiful synthesis of everything we’ve been teaching from De La Riva X to relentless chaining of near side arm and shoulder attacks. Outstanding display of Jiu-Jitsu. Second, @xavier._.bjj who also displayed a perfect example of a new attack style we’ve been developing around the omoplata. Phenomenal submission chain. Thirdly, @trapx_leo who displayed a beautiful highlight reel finish in a blazingly short amount of time. Lastly, Randy who just showed incredible Jiu-Jitsu and getting a fast submission finish and showcasing everything we’ve been working in class. The common theme is that over the last few months I have challenged these folks to develop what I call ‘beautiful Jiu-Jitsu’. The type of Jiu-Jitsu that is unmistakable. Submission oriented. Relentless. Masterful. Artful. The kind of Jiu-Jitsu that people want to watch. The kind of Jiu-Jitsu that will bring eyeballs back to the Gi. All of these athletes did such an incredible job and expressed themselves so beautifully on the mats. Congratulations. taken in 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu by @8020jiujitsu

This is Levi, he’s one of the kids from the @8020jiujitsu kids class. He always comes to class with high energy and ready to move. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him not smiling or laughing. He’s got one mode and that’s go!

He did his first competition yesterday at @fridaynightjiujitsu getting to see the mats from a competition perspective and still had on a smile while doing amazing.

I’m proud of him for going out there, even earning some cash while doing so, his first match he made 💰 . He’s off to a better start on jiujitsu than me 😭

Goal: Win the #1 team title at IBJJF San Antonio in the Gi. Wouldn’t it be cool if an RGV team came out on top in IBJJF over all other teams in the state? What would it mean if a primarily No-Gi academy shocked everyone and came out on top, in the Gi? As a coach, it’s always been a dream to be handed the team title in an IBJJF event. It would mean a great deal IMO as it relates to training methods, teaching, and challenge the status quo. Most people would say I’m crazy and is unlikely, especially in the Gi. We are not most people. And this is exactly why we’re coming for that team title. I think we have a really good shot. taken in 80/20 Jiu-Jitsu by @8020jiujitsu
