Today is 805 Harm Reduction’s 3 year anniversary!

805 Harm Reduction began after a close mutual friend passed away of an overdose. He was in a sober living at the time that had no available Naloxone which could have saved his life. His death brought us closer together and we decided to take action to ensure that harm reduction supplies are readily available in our community.
As our organization grows, so does our passion. We do this for our family and friends, for our younger selves, and for the love of our community.

3 Years ago today we had our very first outreach event. We didn’t yet have Naloxone, test strips, or contraceptives and had no idea what we were doing, so we pooled our money and did what we felt was right. We gave out food, water, personal care, and first aid items.
Now, thanks to Remedy Alliance and @smokeworksharmreduction , we are able to give out free Naloxone, emergency contraceptives, pipes and more.

And thanks to our community, for all the support, generous donations, and invitations to be at events where we can do what we love to do.

We never thought that our little organization of 6 people would become this big. It’s a dream come true and we wouldn’t be where we are today without the love and support from the harm reduction community and our local community, and we are so excited to keep growing with you!

A special shout out to @moon__plant who reached out to us when we first started and offered her support and guidance. She connected us with so many resources and gave up her time to teach us how to do harm reduction the right way. We love you Jennie!!

Thank you so much for all your support we love you all! by @805harmredux

Clean out your closet and know that your supplies will greatly improve someone’s life. If it hadn’t been for other trans folks in my life sharing their supplies with me, I’d be out of a lot more money. -Teagan @beetlegrease by @805harmredux

Just yesterday one of our members spent over $90 on candy last night & we still have some more to purchase. Anything you can contribute will be helpful! We don’t have a specific set goal this time, just ideally enough to assist in covering the cost of the candy, treats, and goodie bags to put everything in! by @805harmredux

It’s almost time for our annual halloween outreach event! Each year we give out treat bags and harm reduction supplies to bring the Halloween spirit to our community. In the past years, we’ve had enough funds to reach about 20 people and buy some cheap candy in bulk. This year we’re hoping to step it up with better quality candy, a bigger reach, and some extra items like some cash or some cigarettes, to really brighten the days of the people we meet. We’d really appreciate your support. Even just $1 helps out a lot. You can donate through zelle (dm) , go fund me or through getting candy on our amazon wishlist. Thank you so much!!! by @805harmredux

Abstinence-only programs do not work for everyone and that’s okay! Programs like AA only have roughly 5-10% long-term success rates. We also know that overdose deaths spike significantly after abstinence-only treatment. We cannot accept this to be the norm.

But, what options are there instead of abstinence?

Self care. A lot of negative effects from substance use is due to not taking care of your body. Brush your teeth, keep yourself clean, eat, and drink water!

Practice safe use! Use clean supplies, carry test kits and naloxone, and never use alone.

Learn more about the substance you’re taking. If you know how the substance affects you physically, you can get a better idea of how to take care of your body.

Stop mixing substances.

Switch to another substance with lower risk.

Only use on certain days of the week or year.

Track your use and slowly taper down to a level you are comfortable with. For example, slowly reducing the amount of times you redose in a day, or taking just slightly less than your typical dose.

Switch your ROA to one with a lower risk, like switching from IV to boofing or snorting to oral dosing.

Join harm reduction support groups to talk about your substance use and what goals you have.

Abstinence can be a great tool, and it does work for some people! However, that doesn’t mean it’s your only option or that you have to stay abstinent. People should never be shamed or judged for not abstaining from substance use. There are many other options. There is still community for you. Harm reduction can meet you where you’re at and help you take steps you are ready for.

If you have any other alternatives comment them down below. 👇 by @805harmredux

The other day while we were doing a first aid outreach, some of the people who we met told us of what was happening. All of us immediately noticed a LOT of water and mud buildup ONLY on the side that people had their tents put up.
This is inhumane and unfair, and to claim that you are watering the ground is just a lie. There are no plants or flowers to water, just mud. We were asked to spread awareness, and nobody deserves to have all of their stuff soaked with water in an attempt to get them out of the area when there is no harm being done by them being there.
This is where people are being sent to stay, as we’ve been told by unhoused locals in Ventura that they are being kicked out of their spots and this is one of the few places left. Forcing people to go to one area and then flooding them is truly disgusting and unacceptable treatment of human beings. by @805harmredux
