Here is some information on frequent eligibility questions regarding blood donations. Don't tell yourself you can't donate blood to help save lives in our community. Many people I meet find out that they actually can donate, even though they've been telling themselves for years that they couldn't.

Patients are literally waiting for the blood to come in….and honestly, no patient should need to wait for the blood. Can you imagine if that was you waiting for it? Hospitals are having to share whatever blood they have to make sure another hospital that needs it more urgently can have it. Patients are being prioritized on who is most important to get whatever blood is available first, while others need to wait. With all the craziness that is happening in our community, there’s more blood going out than is coming in.

Call Blood Bank of Hawaii at (808) 848-4770 or visit bbh.org for a listing of convenient locations where you can donate. Hope to see you at a blood drive soon!

Many people worry that they will not feel well after donating blood. As a blood donor myself who has completed 95 whole blood donations and 59 platelet donations, I can assure you that you will be fine with proper preparation. I always follow these simple recommendations to ensure that my donations are successful. Just like athletes running a marathon...preparation is key.

Rallying the school AND the community for a day of ALOHA!

Blood inventory levels at Blood Bank of Hawaii continue to remain at less than a one-day supply (we would like to be at a 3-day supply) even though hospital utilization continues at a consistent level. Blood inventory levels across the nation are also extremely constrained, which makes it very difficult to import blood from the mainland. This is why local donors are needed now more than ever to ensure our hospitals get the blood products that they are desperately waiting for so no patient must wait to receive treatment.

Appointments made ahead of time are greatly appreciated as it allows us to plan our staffing and resources accordingly so we can honor your busy schedule to be in and out in a timely manner.

If you plan to walk in without an appointment, please expect to spend a little extra time with us as priority will be given to those with appointments.

To schedule an appointment:

STUDENTS – See Mrs. Gonzalez in Room G-109

FACULTY/COMMUNITY – Scan the QR code or call Blood Bank of Hawaii at (808) 848-4770

Can't make it this round? We encourage you to invite friends and family to step up in your place by sharing the attached flyer with them.

Mahalo in advance for your commitment to saving lives here in Hawaii!

Let’s go, Windward side! 🩸✨

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Many people living with diabetes require blood transfusions to treat severe complications like kidney failure, chronic anemia, and critical surgical needs—making community donations vital. Plus, healthy individuals living with diabetes are fully eligible to donate as long as their condition is well-managed!

Join us on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Windward Mall. The Blood Bank of Hawaii bloodmobile will be set up outside near Regal Theatres.

 * Eligibility check: Whole blood donations are spaced 56 days apart. If you last donated on or before September 13th, you may be ready to save lives again.

Scan the QR code on the flyer or head to bbh.org to book your appointment slot today.

His buddy got deferred and asked him to go in his place. His answer? "Eh, they don't need me." 🙄

Turns out his blood is CMV-negative. 🩸

CMV (cytomegalovirus) is a common virus, and many adults have carried it without ever knowing. If your blood tests CMV-negative, your donation is often set aside for the most vulnerable patients, like newborns and some pregnant patients.

You never know what your blood can do until you show up. Bring a friend, or go for one who can't.

Make an appointment today with Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi. 🌺

Repost! ❤️ In Loving Memory of My Daughter, Tiffany Higa

The Story Behind My Blood Drive

On October 28, 2018, my life changed forever.

I received a devastating phone call from my son-in-law telling me that my daughter, Tiffany, had been killed in a car accident in Texas. He asked me to get there as soon as I could. By the grace of timing, I was already scheduled to visit her the very next day, October 29.

Eight years later, I am still trying to understand how this happened and searching for a sense of peace.

🩸 Turning Heartbreak Into Hope

Tiffany had a wish to donate her body to the University of Hawaiʻi for scientific research and education. Unfortunately, that wish could not be fulfilled because her body was cremated.

I wanted to find another meaningful way to honor her wishes and give something back. That is why I organized this blood drive in Tiffany’s memory.

Through this blood drive, I hope to turn tragedy into hope and help save lives in honor of my daughter.

🌺 Remembering Tiffany

Tiffany was a proud graduate of Mililani High School, Class of 1999. She was a Girl Scout troop mom, a loving mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and so much more.

Although she lived in Texas, she was always an island girl at heart. She loved Hawaiʻi, and Hawaiʻi will always be part of her story.

Tiffany leaves behind her three beloved daughters, Gigi, Tita, and Risa; her husband, Neftaly; her mother, Denise Pina Torres; her father, Kenneth (Rhonda) Higa; her sister, Brandi Higa; and her nephews, Noah and Luca. She will forever be loved and missed by her family and all those whose lives she touched.

With all the accidents and emergencies happening these days, the Blood Bank of Hawaii needs our help to keep the blood supply strong! Every donation makes a difference, and your one donation can help save up to THREE LIVES! 🙏🏽❤️

🩸 BE A HERO. BE A BLOOD DONOR. SAVE LIVES!

🎟️🏈 BONUS GIVEAWAY! 🏨🌺

Everyone who signs up AND shows up to donate will be entered into a drawing to win:

🏈 UH Game Tickets!
🌺 A 2-Night Stay at the OUTRIGGER Waikīkī Paradise Hotel!

What a wonderful way to give back to our community while having a chance to win something special! ❤️ by @808lifeline
