✨ "Maid of Orleans" remains one of OMD's most striking releases. Released in January 1982 as the second single from their landmark album Architecture & Morality, the track is experimental for a synth-pop single, it opens with nearly a minute of distorted, avant-garde noise before transitioning into a dramatic, atmospheric waltz driven by a haunting Mellotron melody. Inspired by the historical figure of Joan of Arc, its blend of historical themes and bold electronic instrumentation solidified OMD's reputation as masters of experimental pop.

In 1982, Daryl Hall and John Oates topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)," the second single from their multi-platinum album Private Eyes. Built around a Roland CR-78 drum machine preset, the minimalist arrangement relied on Hall's soulful vocals, an improvised bassline, and Charles DeChant's iconic saxophone solo. Beyond its immediate chart success, the song left a lasting legacy in pop history: Michael Jackson later admitted to Daryl Hall that he lifted the song's distinctive bassline for "Billie Jean," and it has been heavily sampled by artists ranging from De La Soul to Simply Red. The Lion Sleeps Tonight by Tight Fit became a massive phenomenon in early 1982, climbing all the way to Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three consecutive weeks. While the song is instantly recognisable for its catchy "wimoweh" chant, Tight Fit's version was actually a brightly produced cover of Solomon Linda's original 1939 African chant "Mbube,".

Driven by its memorable, safari-themed music video, the track became one of the defining UK hits of the era and a permanent fixture of 80s nostalgia playlists.
