#GibbsGreen50 - On this day in history, fifty years ago to be exact, Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, a 21-year-old prelaw student, and James Earl Green, a 17-year-old Jim Hill High School student, were killed in a burst of gunfire from local and state law enforcement on the campus of Jackson State College.
Since then, not only has Jackson State College become Jackson State University, but we’ve also named our plaza, one of the main parts of the university, after Phillip Gibbs and James Green. I think it’s important for us not to walk through it without knowing the history. We have much to be proud of due to our resilience. How we were still able to be an institution after such a tragic event is an example of our resilience 💙 #80thmissjsu taken in Alexander Hall by @80thmissjsu

April 5, 2019 -
I can go on and on about how life changing this experience has been but I’ll save that for some other time. To say the least, thank you God for placing me at Jackson State University. 4 years ago I took a leap of faith by choosing to attend this institution without ever seeing it in person. While here, I fell in love with the people/community and instantly felt compelled to show my gratitude in as many ways as possible. On April 5, 2019 my beloved student body voted for me, Naysa Lynch, to serve as the 80th Miss Jackson State University.
Tomorrow, April 9th, the 81st Miss Jackson State University and the 4th Mister Jackson State University will be announced.
Allyson, Daisia, Mary, Ruby, Devin, Kijana— I have gotten to know each of you personally and I can say from the heart, that you all are highly qualified to be our next Mister and Miss respectively. Congratulations on making it to this point despite Covid-19! Win or lose, continue to be the Fearless Scholars that you are!
