POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
โ€œThe Darkroomโ€ is a video and sound installation composed of nineteenth-century cabinet card portraits of women whose names and histories have largely been lost to time. Video projection of the artistโ€™s body in performance activates the static archive, asserting agency against a history of lens-based media that has rendered women as objects for visual consumption.

Through an interplay of light and shadow, the work confronts the systems that have historically controlled womenโ€™s representation while foregrounding the absence of the voices and identities of the women photographed.

Our October solo artist is Olivia Maday! Her show, The Darkroom, opens tomorrow, October 2nd at 5pm!๐Ÿ’ซ

Olivia Maday is a Portland, Maine-based multidisciplinary artist working across video, sound, and installation. Her practice examines the representation of women in Western art history and lens-based media, confronting histories of objectification, voyeurism, and gendered power. Occupying both sides of the lens, Maday assumes control over the production and performance of her own image, challenging the traditional divide between image-maker and female subject. Through visual distortion and the grotesque, she disrupts passive representations of the female body, reclaiming it as a site of agency, sexuality, and power.

Maday holds an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including at the CICA in South Korea, the HFBK Hamburg in Germany, and Living Arts of Tulsa in Oklahoma. Maday is a recipient of the Maine Arts Commission Artist Project Grant and currently teaches in the Digital Media Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. by @82parris_

Opening in our front gallery Friday, October 2nd, at 5pm โœจ

Body as Capital is an exhibition at the intersection of sex work and blue-collar labor. In this group show, 11 artists from different backgrounds come together to illustrate what it means to sell a body. Expressed through various mediums are intertwining themes that touch on the exploitation of the proletariat class, the transactionality of womanhood, and the fulfillment that comes from working in innately human industries. by @82parris_

The Art of Looking
Kimberley Harding

08โ€ข22 - 09โ€ข20 *or until decay

A 82Parris Gallery site-specific show
in collaboration with Portland Trails

Slow down and look closely. This installation invites a new view of nature. Take a moment to notice the intricate forms, textures, and structures that you might have otherwise missed.

Sixteen individual elements draw attention to selected details of trees, roots, flowers, and other natural forms.

The artist has added locally foraged, harvested, or donated plant materials, creatively processed but still carrying traces of their original habitat. Each item frames and draws attention to details of the trail. Viewers are drawn into novel interactions with familiar elements of nature. A root becomes a curve; bark becomes a surface; a flower becomes architecture. You see what you might have overlooked, with a shift in culture and scale.

The works and the site are intimately connected. Each item creates a relationship between the found and the fabricated, the temporary and the enduring. As the work decays it will become part of the landscape. Weather, insects, rot, and time become collaborators. The environment transforms the artwork. It gradually returns to a wild state.

Decay creates meaning. The installation invites meditation on the impermanent, transitory nature of life. All these elements will change and disappear as they grow, decline, and renew in natural processes. As time passes and the setting evolves, each viewerโ€™s experience is different. What we see is inconstant. Beauty is present in the moment, even as everything continually changes.

Familiar Artifacts
August 7th-28th 2026

Some objects seem to arrive already carrying stories. Their surfaces suggest histories, their forms feel familiar, yet their meanings remain unresolved. They ask to be encountered rather than explained.

The works gathered here occupy the space between artifact and invention. By transforming materials and reshaping associations, the artists create objects
that appear to hold evidence of human presence, memory, and experience beyond what can be fully known.

Together, these works form an imagined archive: a collection of objects and gestures that exist between recognition and uncertainty, inviting us to consider the stories we inherit, invent, and attach to the world around us. taken in New System Laundry & Cleaning by @82parris_

We are pleased to introduce our 2026 September solo artist ~ Shannon Ryan is a mixed media painter from Philadelphia. She received a BFA in Illustration at University of the Arts in 2018 with a focus in childrenโ€™s books.. She currently lives and works in Philadelphia.

Hand impressions, and lived-in palettes and textures are created through various methods of printmaking, painting, and sculpture. For a deeper material understanding of the work, she references clay sculptures she builds which are sometimes photographed and transferred onto a surface where it alchemically merges with other mediums. Taking influence from magical realism, symbolism and ancient artifacts, her work functions as a theatrical reconstruction of landscapes from memories while also exploring the objects we make and inherit throughout our lives, and the power they assume over reality in our absence. by @82parris_

๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ The 2026 Print Swap Exhibition๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ

Join us for the opening reception September 4th, 5โ€“8pm at 82Parris in Portland, Maine.

On view September 4thโ€“25th

Now in its third year, Little Deathโ€™s annual โ€œPrint Swapโ€ is an international mail art project created to bring artists together across mediums, backgrounds, languages, and locations, building community through the exchange of art beyond the screen.

This year marks the first ever exhibition of the Print Swap, bringing together work from 180 artists across 13 countries, all gathered in one physical space here in Maine.

The exhibition remains true to the ethos of the swap: non-juried, open, and community-driven. It is a celebration of artists finding one another, sharing work, and creating connection through the mail.

In conjunction with the opening, Little Death will also release a small publication, Let Sleeping Birds Fly or The Auguraculum, featuring a curated selection of works from this yearโ€™s submissions.

Organized by Little Death and hosted by 82Parris, with support from Paper Tides print shop.
