St. Michael’s Lent is a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and penance that begins on August 15 and ends on September 29.

Overview of the Devotion

Timeline: It runs from the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) to the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel and All Angels / Michaelmas (September 29).

Duration: While it spans 46 calendar days total, it equals 40 days of fasting because Sundays are excluded, much like the traditional Lenten season before Easter.

Origin: Saint Francis of Assisi started this practice in the 13th century due to his deep devotion to the Archangel Michael. He famously observed this period on a mountaintop, where he received the stigmata in 1224.

Status: It is a private, voluntary devotion in the Catholic tradition and is not obligatory for the faithful.

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

The attraction to Christ involves a spiritual drawing toward His character, unconditional love, and truth. People are drawn to Him through His compassion, authentic authority, and the promise of peace.
